I pay my $8/mo, I should get the same level of service as everyone else.

Unfortunately that is only one part of the equation. You also pay a fee to your ISP. Different ISPs have different features, speeds and pricing.

And if you don't like it now, get ready for a lot of not liking things in the future. I guarantee you this is Netflix's trial balloon. They see 4K coming and it someone has to pay for it.

I see Netflix going to a tiered pricing structure for streaming. The basic service would be SD and highly compressed 720P, the next level up would add less compressed 1080P with an option to add 3D and finally, a 4K tier. You might even see mobile access move to being a extra option for a $1-3 per month with any of the other tiers.

Worst case scenario, on top of all that, Netflix adds an "ISP tax" that they collect but gets paid to the ISP to reimburse them for any of their "costs".

Just a matter time.

I'd gladly pay $1/$2mo premium for Super HD, but of course I don't have that option.

Not that I really care, but according to Netflix, Comcast isn't currently supporting this in the Bay Area.

Someone had a point. The thing that brought tiered pricing for some ISPs into the thing is because the infrastructure can't support everyone constantly using all the bandwidth they've been given.

It's called "thin provisioning". It means we over saturate the # of people on said (in this case) network with the assumption that not everyone will use it at once. The problem comes when more people start to use all their bandwidth. Streaming HD will cause major problems if you have whole communities/cities using it and requires yet another infrastructure upgrade.

They started tiering to deal with this to a) make money to upgrade and b) better know who and how many are using how much data.

i wish the feds would just do a public works project and lay fiber throughout the country. theyre going to look at whatever were doing anyway online, might as well make them pay for it too.

This is dumb. I have a 100 Mbit download speed package and actually get that speed all the time. The super hd stream requires what? 7 Mbit I believe netflix has said yet since my isp (charter) isn't on their list I cannot get it? That is crap. My current service is absolutely capable of supporting multiple streams as is yet because My ISP han't officially sanctioned it I cannot have it? Oh and what is with the windows 8 requirement. I see no reason why it should work with win 8 but not win 7

It's not a matter of "sanctioning" it. Your ISP needs to be part of Netflix's open connect network. Movies are streamed close to the network edge (where you are), saving netflix and your ISP bandwidth cost.

Agree with the Windows 8 requirement... because it's supported through a dedicated app (not a browser plugin). Hope windows 7 gets support soon.

Ah, I didn't realize that. So the point of open connect is that the ISPs work with Netflix to reduce both parties bandwidth costs. If bandwidth were free for Netflix, they would offer this to everyone?

Definitely, as it would be a more consistent experience for everyone, no matter what ISP you use. Here's some good background on what's going on, with a hint as to why some ISPs may be slow to revert to Netflix's Open Connect:

http://pingbin.com/2012/06/future-web-single-on-net-cdn/

And another:

Seeing as Netflix will be moving all its streaming to open connect in the next year or two, you could see SuperHD as a move by Netflix to prod ISPs to switch over more quickly.

Hmm - interesting (even though I have a 720p, non-3D TV and a non-supported ISP). I wonder whether there will be universal support for this on 3D-capable Netflix streaming devices. The only 3D-capable streaming device I currently have is my Oppo BDP-93, though I suppose once I upgrade to a 3DTV that will have streaming built-in anyway.
