So you're okay for paying the same amount of money for half the service? *sigh*

... actually, 1 DVD + Streaming was more expensive than Solo Streaming will be. So I'm actually ok with paying less, for less service. Especially when I haven't used DVDs by mail for multiple months. So again, to reiterate, I'm dropping a service I don't utilize, and paying less money than I previously paid. Not sure what you're sighing about here. Do I wish prices weren't going up at all? Of course, but that's just the way things go.

I will be finding an alternative service/means of watching what I want.

And the completely retarded redesign of the watch instantly site doesn't help.

I keep hearing the first part whenever these Netflix threads pop up, "I'll be leaving Netflix and finding my media elsewhere." ... where are you finding it? People complain about Netflix's streaming selection, but that's not even up to NF, it's due to licensing restrictions. Can anyone name a service that provides a selection equal to or better than NF, for a similar or cheaper cost? I'm not NF fanboy, but I don't see a viable alternative .. if there were one, I'd jump ship immediately (as would .. everyone?), but since there isn't I (and most people?) won't be going anywhere.

As for the second part, I completely agree. WTF were they thinking? Awful.

guess I will finish up the doctor who series then get rid of streaming. There is so much garbage on streaming it's not even funny. $8 a month for a bunch of direct to video junk and 90's tv shows, no thank you.

I feel like the price increases were a done deal forever. Isn't the only reason its so cheap right because Blockbuster started a price war it could not possibly win and netflix had to respond until they collapsed?

I disagree. I've been a Netflix customer since 2001 or 2002. I've never seen the price go down. The only time pricing was stable was in the early-/mid-2000s when there was no streaming. Services like Blockbuster, Vudu, etc. didn't cause a blip in Netflix's pricing. If I keep the Streaming+3 service my price will have doubled since ~2006, and that is entirely attributable to content owners trying to squeeze streaming.

I'm thinking Blockbuster's 3 disc plan for $19.99 might be the way to go. I save $4/month, give up streaming (which is worthless to me anyway), get game rentals, get Blu-Ray free. I just got a 360, so the games are appealing now and free bluray would be impetus to finally get a player.

Anyone know what Blockbuster's selection is like in relation to Netflix's?

I'd say Hulu+. Yes, Hulu+ doesn't have quality movies, but then again neither does Netflix streaming. (I'm thinking about you, Land Before Time XII)

I'll drop to streaming only from my current plan of 1-DVD out. This means about ~$2 savings for me. Something that I should've done months ago since I just barely use the DVD option and sometimes held on a disc for a month or so at a time.

The instant streaming otoh is pretty much going all the time around the clock almost. Hours upon hours per day, sometimes three different streams at the same time with a Roku box, an XBOX 360 and two computers.

at least one report I read today indicated that the unlimited streaming was limited to ONE DEVICE at a time.

What do people want out of NF streaming? Every new release? There are TONS of good (some great) movies up for streaming, some of the them are older movies, but I think it's a pretty solid selection.

All I want is for Netflix to revert back to its previous iteration of the user interface for the PS3. The current one sucks with the max listing of 75 movies with slow scrolling as well as having to scroll past "movies similar to Red Shoe Diaries" to get to the New Releases.

if/when I drop netflix instant, I'll simply stream less and watch dvd's more.

hulu by itself would come close to meeting my streaming needs... netflix instant is purely a time waster for me. all I watch are half-decent tv series to kill time during the summer doldrums.

what my netflix subscription has gone up by is almost exactly what hulu+ would cost per month.

at least one report I read today indicated that the unlimited streaming was limited to ONE DEVICE at a time.

This was discussed before here in ATOT and a lot of people were claiming the same thing, but if this is actually a restriction it has never been enforced on me.

Usually what happens most evening is me streaming on the computer, my son on the XBOX in the living room, and my wife in the bedroom on the Roku. This happens often and I never had a problem with it.

Edit: Unless you mean this is a new restriction that's going to be enforced with the new pricing, which would suck big time.

I can't believe all the people complaining about the streaming selection. Look, it isn't meant for new releases, the studios won't allow it. But I still have a list of 200 things on my queue that I want to watch, and I'd say at least 100 of them are well known GOOD movies, I'll be lucky to get through those. Add in stuff that interests your personally and there is more than enough content. It's an absurd amount of content for the price...If you want new or specific movies, feel free to pay $4+ each to stream them

Cancelled within 30 minutes of reading this.

I had the 1 DVD option. In the past I've streamed a lot, but only when they release certain series that I'm interested in. I had not watched anything on it in months because its selection is @*#(ing sh*t most of the time, and we all know that. I only watched discs every 2-3 months because I hate waiting for things in the mail. I watch all new movies either on Redbox or downloading them.

I watch a ton of movies but Netflix just doesn't quite fit the bill for me anymore and I do not tolerate a 60% increase in cost for anything.

If streaming had a good selection, all new movies available right away I'd happily pay $20/month for it, but even $8/month to watch movies from 2002 or B movies I don't want, it's not worth anything to me.

I believe that in light of the cost increase back in Feb with this happening again it marks desperation on Netflix's part. I think the market is moving in ways that is not good for them and they were forced to react in this manner, despite knowing it would get some bad press. If I owned their stock I would sell it, personally. The future is clearly streaming (physical media so 20th century) and although Netflix is the biggest player in this arena they are competing with much, much bigger companies that are putting their weight behind it. Also it is something that can quickly be expanded. To compete with their disc sales required a distribution network. To compete in online streaming just requires more servers, and if you already have some (e.g. Amazon) you can stand them up in no time.

But I still have a list of 200 things on my queue that I want to watch, and I'd say at least 100 of them are well known GOOD movies, I'll be lucky to get through those.
I realize some people are fine with watching old movies or indie films. For them streaming is a bargain. For me I can spend 10 minutes looking for anything I can be bothered to watch and find nothing. I stopped looking on streaming a long time ago as it never has anything I can be bothered to watch.

Just outta curiosity, what do you watch that can't be found at all on NF streaming? It seems like people want new releases, and you're just not going to find those on ANY cheap streaming service because the studios DO NOT WANT people streaming them upon release instead of purchasing them.

Edit: Holy shit, in look at NF Streaming for stuff in response to this thread, I just found out that all 5 seasons of the 90's X-Men cartoons are up.. there goes a fairly substantial portion of my free time. Awesome.

Yeah, I assume I cannot find my stuff anywhere, so for now I have to either use redbox or download it. Virtually no new movie is on streaming, not for months at a minimum.

That really is exactly my point. Five seasons of 1990's x-men cartoons. Maybe a league of their own or tootsie is on there when you're finished with those.

What's wrong with watching some awesome 90's cartoons for a bit? I'm asking you again, what is "your stuff" that you can't find. I"m curious because NF streaming has a good bit of everything except new releases which are unavailable for the aforementioned reasons and as such I think it's an inappropriate gripe about the service. If you bought NF to stream new releases then you purchased as an uninformed consumer and have no one to blame but yourself.

Netflix has lots and lots of "desperation" movies on Instant Watch; things I'd watch if I were bored and desperate. There isn't anything there that's a draw in and of itself.

The problem isn't that I signed up for Netflix thinking that Instant Watch would give me "Horrible Bosses" while still in the theater, the problem is I signed up for Netflix to get "Horrible Bosses" ASAP when it comes out on disk and the service keeps going up in price so I could maybe stream Rob Schneider in The Animal if I were desperate.

Instant Watch brings little or nothing to the table in terms of quality yet has been the driving force behind 50%+ rate increases over 5 years.

$9.99 for 1 disc at a time + streaming. $15.98/month represents a 60% increase in price.

:hmm: Right, but he was talking about moving to the stream plan. Doesn't matter... I think we're just thinking of different parts of what he said.

for me, netflix has always been primarily about the dvd's, where their selection can't be beat, and streaming was just a nice bonus add-on for when I was having a slow day at work.

would I enjoy screwing around with some random 90's cartoons for a bit? sure... would I enjoy it so much that I'll pay an extra hundred bucks a year? er, no thanks.
