Doesn't Hulu+ come with ads? I won't pay for it based just on that..and no, I don't watch cable either.
Yes it has ads. I dropped it before my free trial was even up because of the ads.

That's a tough one. I like the dvd's by mail (I don't have to make a trip, and there's no per day rental charge) and I use the streaming a lot. I don't feel like the combined services are worth $16/month, but I'm not sure which subscription (or both) I'd drop.

I use the dvd's to watch "old" movies. I've seen a lot of the animated features this way, including How to Train Your Dragon, Meet the Robinsons, Megamind, Tangled, etc. I enjoy the majority of them, and I'm sure there are a fair amount of films (animated and live action) that are less than a decade old that I've yet to see and would enjoy.

I try to watch one dvd a week, though my average is probably 3 every 4 weeks. The $8 dvd only subscription would probably be worth it for me, especially since I don't have to go anywhere to get the movies.

On the streaming side, I generally use it for background noise, though I've also watched a couple of tv series here and there. When I'm preparing meals I like to have an episode playing on my kitchen laptop. It's not uncommon for me to go to through 2-3 episodes a day between dinner preparation, eating, and clean up. Plus I usually watch an episode of a TV show at night (currently Phineas & Ferb).

However, with things like Hulu, shows being hosted on their network sites (e.g. Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, South Park), and Amazon Prime (I had forgotten about that until this thread, I wonder what their selection is like), I could probably do just fine without streaming. Well, technically I could do without both, but the streaming would be more replaceable.

I'll wait until September before making a final decision but I guess canceling streaming would be best for me.

Yeah, I was shocked that Hulu + came with ads. But I still kept it for some of the TV series archives.

I haven't watched anything on Hulu+ in more than a month though...

It's time to look at the competition.

I want to see what Red Box and the other ones do now that Netflix has pissed everyone off. This is a chance for those other companies to pounce if they have the balls and infrastructure to compete.

While I am not happy with the increase, it isn't all that bad. For 2 DVD and streaming it will be $20 a month. I recall renting dvd for $3 - $4 per dvd and I can easily go through 8 DVD a month through mail and then add the streaming too and it is still the best deal out there.

Agreed, but when you're like me and only watch it when the weather is bad or when a few 'good' movies that I missed in the theater come through on DVD, it's pretty steep. It's still a good value, but if I didn't pay for the movie ticket in the first place, I might just be able to wait another 6 months to a year and a half to see it on regular TV.

If you use it a lot, yes. If you're like me and watch one DVD maybe every six weeks, it's a ripoff and I might as well just buy them instead. I do watch a lot of streaming - hopefully the selection will increase as I wrap up my queue. If not, I'll watch it all and then cancel.

I don't really see how a dollar a day plus having to go and pick up and drop off the movie appeals to people

Because it's close to my house. I can go to BB and get the newest releases, and not have a short wait, long wait or very long wait. If it was a choice between NF w/ Bluray and BB I would drop Netflix for BB in an instant as their price includes both games and the ability to exchange in store so I don't have to wait for mail every time.

Isn't the Canadian version more expensive than the US and has far far less content?
It's the same price, but with the exchange rate they have to pay a whole lot more, eh?

The only reason they have less content is because of sensorship of curse words, full on nudity, and all their war movies aren't allowed to show more than 1 tank at a time.

so you pay for satellite but netflix streaming is only worth $3/month to you? people really overestimate what EIGHT dollars a month is. that's at most an hour of work if you have it tough. a decent lunch or an ok dinner. less than 1 movie ticket...two new movie streams...if you have any taste whatsoever, and even if you don't, you can find enough on netflix streaming that will last you YEARS

There's nothing worthwhile on netflix streaming to keep me occupied for a month, let alone YEARS. 99.9% of it is pure crap that is just painful to watch.

HBO Go is awesome and so is having a DVR. I have about 2 hours a day in entertainment time and in that time i want to watch the best programming and I want it in HD, when I want it and without commercials. DVR+HBO Go =

Money?

um... either $50 a month is something you should be saving to make sure you can afford ramen noodles OR you shit $50 on a weakened eating a meal you won't remember and watching a movie you'll soon forget.

I'll get a hell of a lot less utility going to see harry potter than I will from my HBO Go and HD DVR... I used to say "hey, just watch TV over the internet" but the convenience of hulu/netflix doesn't trump the awesomeness of HBO Go.

Now; if HBO sold its services apart from a SAT/Cable provider...

I think the TV series alone are worthwhile.

I think the TV series alone are worthwhile.

The only TV series I've gotten into in recent times was Stargate, LOST!, and the office and I've watched all of those. I can use couch potato to grab them from usenet so I'm not out anything.

There's really not been any other series on that has grabbed my attention recently that I can't get off the network channels.

It's not really obvious if it's HD or not (at least not on the ps3 unless you hit the button on the bluray remote to bring up the stream type after the movie is playing). There are some out there, and it looks good (although my cable box still does better hd). It seems like they are adding quite a few of them though, many documentaries and new movies are in HD now. Not too sure about TV series though, I never watch them.

it says "HD" right next to the movie title when you scroll over it, if it is offered in HD.

It isn't spectacular, but damn good for streaming quality.

The thing that pisses me off about their streaming is they will only have some shows licensed for a certain period so if you get into the show you can't finish it.

I was into season 2 I think of Babylon 5 and then the license ran out so I can only finish it if I get the DVDs or go to the torrents.

That makes my wife furious. And me too. But not as much as me. We started watching "Satisfaction" which *had* three seasons on streaming. We made it through season 1. Watched one episode of season 2 and came back the next night to find season 2 gone. 3 is still up. But three is toast.

WTF?

On the ps3 it does? I've looked for it but can't find it.

For those of you that just STREAM...try convincing a friend to let you stream off of their account. Not that I would do such a thing.

Cool, I'll take a look again.

Thats probably part of the reason why they keep increasing costs. Most people I know share their streaming accounts with their whole family. For a while my wife was using her mom's account, and occasionally when more than 6 devices were connected, we would need to boot one off and rejoin ours. We eventually got our own account, but I can't imagine this loose policy being good for netflix, they must use a ton of bandwidth. Maybe it doesn't matter and they don't pay much for bandwidth, who knows.

I've never understood why they can't just limit it to 1 or 2 streams at a time. I've streamed from my computer, my TV and my PS3 simultaneously before (just to test it) and it worked. They really do only limit you to amount of devices, they don't seem to care about simultaneous streams.

I thought I read simultaneous streaming is limited to two and the number of devices on an account is six.

I don't need to leach streaming from someone. There are better free streaming alternatives out there.
