Netflix to increase pricing tomorrow

Since neither the press release nor the articles actually mention the bulk of the pricing, here it goes:

Unlimited Streaming $7.99
1 DVD $7.99
2 DVD $11.99
Streaming + 1 DVD $15.98
Streaming + 2 DVD $19.98
Streaming + 3 DVD $23.98
Streaming + 4 DVD $29.98
1 DVD (Limited) $4.99

There are no advertised prices for 3 or 4 DVDs w/o streaming so I guess those aren't offered.

For me, I have Streaming + 3 DVD. As of December 2010 I was paying $16.99. In ~8 months' time the price will have gone up 41% for absolutely nothing of value to me. Netflix keeps claiming that they're raising prices for anticipated cost increases in streaming, but their streaming content is just as shitty as it's ever been. But, they refuse to offer a 3 DVD plan so I can't even drop the worthless streaming and save $7.99 (paying 15.99) and keep the same number of disks out at a time!

It's seriously time to start exploring other options.

'Add to instant queue' ftw.

You still have to find the movie 1st before you can add it to the instant queue, and it's a pain in the ass to find anything on their site or with their updated UI on the PS3. [edit] nvm, I see your response was to him using instant queue for "bookmarking" his tv series for his xbox, not finding movies, disregard.

My mom's TV ONLY has this instant queue option, and it sucks. She has to boot up her computer, then log into netflix, add movies, then go back to the TV to open the movie.

whats annoying is up until a few months ago i was paying $16.98 for 3 dvd's and streaming. then Netflix changed it without notice to $14.99 for 2 dvd's

no way am i paying for $20 for 2 movies +streaming i will drop to just streaming or restart cable tv.

plus over that time period you lost free access to HD/Blurray discs, and you lost access to new releases from several studios, plus over the last week or 2 you lost access to Sony films on streaming, with Disney likely to follow suit in the coming weeks.

I feel like the price increases were a done deal forever. Isn't the only reason its so cheap right because Blockbuster started a price war it could not possibly win and netflix had to respond until they collapsed?

I hadn't used streaming until a couple weeks ago (no broadband) but I gather the interface used to be better? I'll admit it does seem kind of cumbersome to me, but once I figured out how to use and add things to the instant queue it was a lot more useful.

I'm not super happy with the options they present though. I have 1 DVD + streaming now, which is perfect. I'm not really concerned about $16 for that in the future...I mean its a better value than my shitty satellite service or renting from the local place, but percentage wise its a pretty big increase. We aren't watching many rented DVDs anymore...but I do like to watch the occasional new release. I wish there was a streaming + 1 DVD limited option for $13 because that's what I really want. I don't think I watch more than one DVD a week tops now.

I'll probably just sit on it until Sept when the price increase actually happens.

you could actually sort movies, instead of relying on what Netflix decides to present to you first, and you didn't have to hover over any movie to see the star rating or go to the info page (especially on series, I nearly always go to the info page before streaming just to make sure that netflix actually has all the episodes)

and settop devices like my xbox had a "recently watched" category, which made it nice when you're watching a tv series over the course of a couple weeks and it's either not in your queue at all or buried deep in it.

I'll drop to streaming only from my current plan of 1-DVD out. This means about ~$2 savings for me. Something that I should've done months ago since I just barely use the DVD option and sometimes held on a disc for a month or so at a time.

The instant streaming otoh is pretty much going all the time around the clock almost. Hours upon hours per day, sometimes three different streams at the same time with a Roku box, an XBOX 360 and two computers.

Most of the good movies are not available for streaming anyways, this has been their plan all along. Time to look into other streaming services and perhaps take up a short position in their stocks.

The carrier costs for netflix to stream a movie are about 5 cents, compared to about a dollar for a dvd. They would love for everyone to be streaming. They would prefer to have all their titles available for streaming.

The movie studios are the ones keeping that from happening, and they are the ones raising the prices for streaming to try and squeeze netflix out.

I've watched maybe 1 movie and a handful of tv shows via streaming but this still pisses me off. I liked having the option of streaming but it's definitely not worth what they will be charging. They should give you either 1 movie or X hours worth of streaming per month in the DVD only package.

I wouldn't mind if they would improve their streaming selection. It's decent for TV shows, although even then it often stops more than an entire season before the show's current point (assuming it's a show that is still on the air).

For movies it is pretty bad. Lots of crap, not much good stuff. Usually if I think of a movie I'd like to watch and look it up, it's DVD-only.

I just canceled my Netflix after I got that email.
My date is 9/1/11.

I don't use it enough to justify it anymore. $10 was ok, but $16 pushed me to cancel.
I will just use Red Box if I want to watch something.

Problem with Red Box is it doesn't have older movies. My wife and I are watching the Planet of the Apes series. None of them are available on streaming. But the only other option is to either buy DVDs from Amazon or a used DVD store, or rent them from Blockbuster for like $4 each.

I could easily ditch Netflix if I was only missing out on newer movies, because Red Box does those pretty well. But you miss a lot of older stuff too. There are a lot of moments where I'm like "Hey, I've never seen X but it's a classic, I should see that!" and Netflix works great for that.

EDIT: Then again, $4 from Blockbuster isn't so bad when compared with this new pricing scheme. I don't exactly get a ton of DVDs from Netflix. Could probably drop down to 2 a month as long as I can get that with unlimited streaming. With Blockbuster the problem is driving to the store.

Do they really think raising prices every 6 months will not cause a large percentage of their customers to cancel their subscriptions? First time wasn't a big deal, second time made me start to question it, now a third increase... I will be finding an alternative service/means of watching what I want.

The sad part is, Netflix was the one company/service I really liked and recommended to family and friends.

And the completely retarded redesign of the watch instantly site doesn't help.

my last landlord used to raise my rent every year... and the raises were never that big, but at a certain point, it was like wtf? I know his property taxes weren't going up when housing values crashed and it was reassessed.
