If you want decent access to a catalog of movies you are going to have to subscribe to three or more services.
yeah that pretty much kills streaming for me.

Not that I care since due to licensing issues Netflix and similar services never stood a chance in my country.

Their website lists many movies, including some classics.

http://www.epixhd.com/all-movies/

That said, if Epix was getting too greedy with their pricing, it might be a good thing for consumers and for Netflix to stand their ground.

I guess it's about time I finally watch 12 Years A Slave. BTW, I got one of the Transformers movies for free on Google Play but never did watch it.
How is getting less for the same price better than the same for more money?

Don't even remember the last time we watched a movie on Netflix, so I won't miss these movies.

What exactly is this Disney deal? Is stuff like The Incredibles coming to Netflix?

Edit: Googled it, interesting. The Disney owned content will be good to see.

I was always stunned at how few movies Netflix has. If it was an old time video rental store it would be a very tiny one, with a whole bunch of the movies grade z.

Some international Netflix versions are actually getting a better movie selection than the US. Netflix Canada seems to get fairly new releases. Though I still stick to the US version because it has a better selection overall. Especially TV shows.

Daredevil was great!

What annoys me now is the lack of consolidation. I watch some movies on Netflix...some on Amazon...some on VUDU...some off my PLEX server...it's such a dumb system. The squabbling is no good for consumers. They could be making money hand over fist if they wisened up

The movie industry is terrified about letting any one streaming portal turn into what iTunes is to the music industry. They see how Apple now has them by the balls, and has ripped out a lot of the margin the music industry used to get. Video content will remain fragmented behind various paywalls to maximize the potential revenue from consumers and control over the content.

It sucks for consumers, but a Spotify or iTunes of music would mean a lot of content with movie-level production values would have to go away.

As far as Netflix, I called this years ago. Now we will see if their original content is really strong enough to put them on a HBO level.

I generally like Netflix, and their own shows are pretty damn good. Considering they just started, they're right up there with top networks on quality exclusives.

But the ability for streaming services to take things away makes streaming an optional supplement, not my main source, and I'll start and stop service as I see fit. If enough people get tired of these streaming service wars and restart service every now and then to see the new stuff then cancel after a month, that's going to kill their bottom line.

100% ok with it and if I were them, I'd do the same. Every streaming service seems to offer those big movies, so this should be a good way to avoid being a commoditized service.

And I generally like their Netflix original content so it all works out for me.

I just realized that I only watched Netflix for the series (old, new, original, whatever). My wife probably watches like 2-3 movies per month on average, but the series, all kinds of them, are basically non-stop playing throughout the week from all three people in this household. So I guess this isn't going to affect us much.

Exactly. Pick one:

A) 5 years of Breaking Bad, commercial free

B) a crappy Transformers movie

I'd rather have A) , and I can always get B) using the disc service.

Their original content is solid. Plus they have AMC's stuff like Breaking Bad & Walking Dead. Epix was shit anyway, all old movies from what I saw other than a decent one here and there. The only two I actually liked from A-D were American Hustle and Apocalypse Now.

Exactly. All this move does is make me want to double down on my own media library. The only content that you can count on to be there next year is stuff sitting on your own hard drives. When I cut out cable I invested heavily in Blu Rays (and CHEAP HD DVDs) that I then ripped, and I would rather continue on that path then chase these movies to whatever new paywall they will be locked behind.

One thing that hurts Netflix is that they don't put out content week by week like most TV companies, they dump whole seasons at once. They do this inspire binge watching, but the end result is half the months out of the year they don't have new content coming out which will soon be the main reason to pay for Netflix if you don't have kids (in which case it pays for itself to be a babysitter).

As a hedge against Netflix I have an old Roku HD-XR that I have hooked to a Hauppauge HD-PVR via component. With this setup I have been manually ripping Netflix original series to my media server, just got done with Daredevil last week. That way if I ever get to a point where they no longer have new content coming out that I want, I can cancel my Netflix subscription without my wife losing access to old episodes of Orange is the New Black or whatever.

I've wondered why they do that with their original programming. And I wonder about the streaming services cooling off soon. They started out with a giant pool of content going back decades. Eventually everyone will have watched and rewatched the old stuff and all the only draw they'll have left is the original programming. Which, I think, makes it even more important to release the original programming week-to-week.
Why inspire binge-watching? Without commercials, their monthly fee is the same whether I watch it once a week or 14 hours every day. I'd think week to week would keep me from just subscribing once every four months.

Netflix + Hulu (with Showtime add on) + Amazon Prime + HBO NOW here. You get a pretty good spread of movies from them when you put them all together. For movies that aren't on those, I either buy or rent them from iTunes or Vudu. I also buy season passes for certain shows that aren't available elsewhere (Fear the Walking Dead & Scream, right now.) Altogether this is still way, way cheaper than when I was paying $100+ a month for cable.

I'm the exact opposite. I think you were the one that turned me onto Plex and the Xbox One for home media streaming around the beginning of the year. I've realized that I simply don't re-watch movies very often. I just leave my NAS turned off now. I'm thinking that the $5 a month I spend on Plex would probably be better put towards just renting movies from iTunes or Vudu. That way I don't have to worry about keeping up with current technologies to keep my own media server running.

Also, I discovered that my new Samsung TV with the seperate little computer box (One Connect) can play MKVs directly off the NAS and bitstream DTS-HD to my receiver through the ARC.

Well that's neat.

Sweet. I did that a lot on the Kindle devices which were the only way you could do offline caching before. Good to see they opened that up to other platforms.

I hear Apple is entering the streaming space and making their own content. Apple has a HUGE war chest. Be curious to see if they can take down Netflix.

I plan on buying a new Apple TV the day it's available for pre-order. I can't wait to see what their streaming TV offering is. Mainly I just want AMC and FX\FXX.

I wish netflix would increase their catalog of classic films, foreign films, and indie films.
