OK...I found a Netgear 314 router for $120ish. I don't know if this is a good deal or not.

First, on Staples, PM the 314 w/ buy.com, which is 154.99. Then use the coupon on techbargains.com for $40 off $150. Shipping is free over 50 bucks. Plus tax, roughly 7 dollars, which brings it to $120ish.

Or you can pricematch with buy.com, then use 2 $25 off $75 coupons to save $10 more. Add in the $20 rebate on the router and it comes out to around $90 after tax.

Didnt the rebate on the Router already expire? Or is there a new promo going?

There was a $20.00 MIR when I purchased this at the end of Nov. I was in a BB today and saw this router on the shelf. It had a MIR of $20 which was good until 1/13/01 I believe. BB prints the MIR with the cash register receipt so I was out of luck as far as getting a copy for myself.

Yes Revenge786, you're missing the fact that this is a month-old post and both the rebate and $40 off $150 coupon have expired

I bought the RT314 router and it sucks!!

The damn thing doesn't support opening port ranges so it can only have 12 ports open at once. So you can't use Roger Wilco or MS Gamevoice.

Plus, the stupid thing doesn't have an on/off switch and it needs to be reset every so often because of my crappy DSL line.

The negatives about the above router are true to an extent, but, there are solutions for all of them.

The port range issue has two solutions:
1) Using the telnet setup menu you can set a machine inside the network for all requests to go to by default. That means you can have at least 1 computer inside your network able to play games.
The next release of firmware is supposed to allow "port ranging" so you can set rules for other machines.

2) You can reboot the router from within the telnet menu, go to #24 system maint. #4 Diagnostic, #11 reboot. You shouldn't need to do this very often if you have the right version of firmware. (It seems those with PPOe [sic?] isp's have more problems in this area).

This is a decent site for info:

Thanks for the headsup dman.

Unfortunately, for myself I'd like to try and use Roger Wilco to communicate with my friends while fragging and we are not on a LAN so it does me no good. As for rebooting, it's easier for me to reach behind my router and pull the plug than go into telnet and reboot the thing. I wish they put an on/off button on the thing though since my PPPoE DSL line goes dead alot.

dman6666,
Thanks for the update. I was getting concerned that with all the things I was installing on my network that I'd run out of SUA addresses. That'll be cool to do port range forwarding.

I'm extremely happy with this router. It's as fast as the proxy server firewall that I had setup before I bought it.

Whatever server you setup as the default under Menu 15 SUA Server will receive all inbound traffic. Thus, you should be able to run any game or application on that machine without a problem.
