LOL right after posting my thank you to puterman I checked out my Gold Box on a lark...got the usual lame crap and then it asked me what category I wanted, one choice was computers so I went for it - first item was this router! Another $4.50 cheaper. So I ended up ordering for $40.49 shipped and I cancelled my initial order! The rebate is still valid of course too.

BUH -- I can connect via SSH through my linksys router without getting disconnected. I use FSecure at work and have port 22 redirected to a linux box at my house.

This is not intended as a thread-crap...

Just today, an article showed up on Slashdot about this model of router causing NTP DOS floods at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. It seems that the firmware had a hardcoded reference to the UWM time server, and would hit it at once-a-second, trying to get a time reference. They were getting on
the order of 250K packets/sec just for this...

Here's a link to the related triage:

I just had my wired router trashed by a lightning strike. Does anyone know if you can turn off the wireless function on this router and use it only as a wired one? I don't have any wireless devices and would rather not open up potential security risks if I don't have to.

Yes - you can disable/enable wireless

The price is right and this router is very good though it's range is not as good as that of its predecessor which had a bigger 5dbi antenna.

The predecessor was able to span close to 80ft indoors through walls and ceilings. This one is good for 30-50.

This is why I couldn't get the time to update properly. I finally gave up and a few months later it started working fine. There is a fix however.

"Customers can upgrade to newer firmware versions, which are available for download from Netgear's support site. The most current version of firmware available... does not utilize UW-Madison's time service nor does it poll too frequently."

Almost picked up a wired Linksys the other day...glad I didn't now! Thx a bunch.

As noted by StevenNic and seen on another site:

Netgear Bug, Aug 26
Netgear has a bug in several routers that causes problems. MR814 owners should upgrade to at least 4.13.

JFYI, if you ordered this from Amazon, then it's the newer MR814v2, which does NOT have the NTP bug. Whatever you do, DO NOT update your v2 with the MR814 "bugfix" firmware, because it'll kill your router. FWIW, the 814v2 my friend just got from Amazon yesterday already had the latest (5.01) firmware on it.

Yes, it can. There are 4 wired ports and one wireless antenna, which can support multiple connections as well. I have two PC's connected wired, and two PC's connected wirelessly.

Mine just came in ...damn this thing is small...smaller than any of my older wired only routers. And they still managed to fit all the ports in this thing. The antenna looks small but i get great reception on it a floor down.

Yes looks like price before rebate just went up to $65 making it $45 AR. Just wait. I bet within a week or two it will go on sale again as amazon gets more in stock.

Is there a similar router (reliable, affordable) that supports a larger range?

And for those who have this Netgear router, how is it performing so far? Does connection drop a lot over two floors?
