Im looking at getting a dsl/cable router and just wanted some opinions on how configurable and well they work. They are

Linksys BEFSR11-CA LINK
Netgear RP114 LINK

Ive used both briefly, just setting them up for customers but never really used them

I have used a linksys and it is very easy to use, but im not sure if it is better than the netgear - they are both good and you shouldn't have a problem with either.

The SMC is supposed to be the best. I bought the Linky though because I like how all the connections are on the back. The SMC the input is on the back and the output is on the front. Hard to place it in a home situation where you can see the status lights with all the wires sticking out the front.

when they are working, both the netgear and the linksys are equally as good, but people have had more problems with the linksys, it seems. linksys has a toyish plastic look, netgear has a more professional metal look.

I have had my Linksys for about 8 months now, serve 4 systems at home: 2 windows and two Macintosh. Never had a problem!! the Linksys has a very manageable interface. I can only image that the Netgear would be an equal product.

At my work I have Asante and Linksys, both play together very well.

The plastic of the Linksys has never bothered me. My router at home, as well as the switch at work are in closets, or hidden. The look of te unit is not as important as the reputation of the manufacture, the type of warranty, and the type of tech support that you are going to get from the manufacture.

Linksys has been great for me and I would put it at a client site!!!

I've owned both and to this day netgear is better. I have the rt314 it's a older model but works well.
So why is the netgear better than Linksys. Simple the linksys will lock up if you have over 30KB/sec uploading and over 100KB or so downloading simutaneously. Why? The dinky cpu in the linksys just can't handle the packets. So for the average joes just get a linksys no biggie. But if you run an ftp site, transfer svcds, isos on your lan, or do heavy p2p apps then run for the netgear.

Ive had good experiences with the Linksys...only problem I had was a bad firmware update was disconnecting me randomly. Downgraded the firmware and fixed it...not like I lost any features in it. AH well...but I havent run into the upload/download problem that mrbass was talking about.

in general, Netgear products have higher price and higher class looking than Linksys/Dlink/SMC's,
like the router, RP114 has metal chassis while all other 3 have plastic chassis.

I've had my 4-port linksys for more than a year now and no problems at all. I've reseted it a total of about 4 times.

I always go with Linksys for networking stuff. Only encountered 1 bad part and it was taken care of by them VERY well. As far as looks, yah okay they do have a cheesy look but I put all that stuff in phone closests and out of sight anyway so I'm not too concerned about how it looks. I just want it to work right and have good support when it doesn't work right.
