Thanks for the heads up on the free shipping Schmo, I called Staples back and they are going to now credit me for the $14.99 the first CSR charged me for shipping.
Just ordered the RT314. $83 or something. Will take a week to ship, but its worth it. The staples woman didnt want to give me the price at $109 but $129 because its a rebate, but after hanging up and getting some guy who just wanted to get the order done and over with it went smoothly. They didnt ask me to show them amazons page, they must be getting lots of requests for this.
Just received my rt314 today, I'm very impressed with the quality of the router, looks top notch. Not cheap plastic like most the lower priced routers, switches and hubs, it's all metal. The instructions make it seem very easy to hook up, we'll see.
anyone know where the code 91202 came from? I assume an email? Staples CSR wants me to fax the email in. WTF is that. Oh well, seems like they are getting tighter on their coupon policy, Watch this code be only for company employees or something.

Sounds an awful lot like the code I used ;-) Just call back and get a different CSR. I think they actually look for a way to get rid of you when you say the word pricematch because they then have extra work to do when entering the order to justify the PM.
<< additional modem for his PC or could he access the net via my PC? >>
Your son only needs Ethernet card to access the Internet. All the internet traffic will go through the router. No additional modem is required.
<< SMC cable/DSL router would be the way to go? >>
I would. It includes a print server, so your computer does not need to be on if your son wants to print out something. It also doesn't slow your system down every time a print request is sent. A serial port for dial-up connections is also provided. Your service WILL GO DOWN at some inconvenient point. Prepare for it and get this router.
<< any recommendations on Ethernet cards >>
You don't have to be brand loyal in this case. Any will do. Make sure that drivers are available for your particular operating system. I find that SMC provide drivers with the most flexibility.
Does anyone know if online gaming is possible using this router? I almost exclusively use my cable connection for this purpose, so if this router can't handle it I'll cancel my order with Staples ASAP.
I still ahve not received mine, but I noticed in the entertainment forum on dslreports that most people said they had no problems at all gaming with this router.
Someone mentioned problems with the Linksys router. What kind of problems have you heard about? My only problem is the lack of DHCP reservations. Does anyone know if the NetGear or SMC have this feature?
Dealmaker: the code you mention comes from a credit card offer- only people with valid Staples credit cards can get it. There are other $30 codes that work- I just used one a few minutes ago on the Netgear router. Side note: seems like alot of people have been using the PM from Amazon.com- the sales associate didn't even have to look anything up after I asked for a PM.
this is a really good router..i got it hooked up to my verizon dsl modem and it works perfect. i have 3 sysytems on one dsl line and the bandwidth is perfect. i'd reccomend this one over the linksys one because it looks good, and its stackable (my dsl modem is on top of the thing!). i got mine from outpost for a lot more...so the 79 bucks is a hot deal....
