I just got one as well. The CSR had to pricematch to Amazon's shipping which for some reason was $8.55 for standard shipping--that seems kind of high to me. After tax, I ended up paying about $93. Not a bad deal I guess.

RE: Ports on the Netgear. There is a setting for a SUA Server, which, basically allows ALL ports to be directed to 1 computer.

RE: Why SMC is better for starting out: Has everything the netgear has plus, print server, port ranging, and a serial connection for using a dialup provider.

Now, the Print server is not all that impressive (IMHO). You can't use USB Printers w/o some kind of adapter (if that). Bi-Directional Communication is out (so no messages back from printer about ink status, job status, etc. Besides, you could always connect a printer to one of your PC's and share it out from there. This feature only allows you to save power by running the printer server on the router.

The Port Ranging: Programs such as NetMeeting +Video Conferencing require certain ports to be open, dynamically in fact... and much more than the 12 that are available in Netgear. You can specify to open ports 4000-4300 in one rule. (You could only open 12 of those ports on the netgear).
You can get around this limitation on the netgear... you'll have to read up on it to learn the details.
Games are another concern, some games require dynamic ports in certain ranges to be available or require a lot of ports (again more than 12) to be available. On the netgear you open your machine to attack by putting it outside the firewall (via the SUA Server option). On the SMC you can open only what port ranges are necessary. A little more security...

The SMC having a Serial Port means when your DSL or CABLE goes down you could have the SMC Dial into (w/ a modem) an ISP and still share your network. Saves you from having to mess around when service outtages occur.

Again, the 2 products (SMC Barricade and Netgear RT31x) are both highly rated and you can't go wrong with either. Just decide if the features above are important enough to pay the extra price for the SMC(for me they were not-I bought the Netgear, but, they would be nice to have).

I've only skimmed the surface, you should read the reviews and visit the forums on PracticallyNetworked or DSLReports for the product(s) you are interested in. You will find all your answers and more there! Links are in the history of this thread.

I ordered the SMC Barricade for 99.95. I think the print and modem features make this the best. Works great!

I read up on all those routers. It never said how many ports and port ranges I can open though with the SMC. Can someone who has one/had exerience with one tell me please?

Thanks
Garrett.

Well, just got this router from Staples for a total of 84.79! Had them pricematch Amazon at 109.99. It now says on Amazons site that there is free shipping for this item and she honored that! Then I slapped her with the 30 off 100 to bring it down to 79.99. Add tax and I snagged it for 84.79. Sweet.

SMC has 10 Port Maps (single ports) and 8 "Special Application" options for setting Port Ranges. It's in the documentation that you can download from the SMC webpage.

Netgear has 12 Port Maps and no port ranges.

In theory, the next Firmware for the NetGear is suppossed to support port ranges.

Someone told me they have 35 ports open on the netgear. Because the netgear is cheaper now, I want to go that way. Does anyone know how to get 35 ports.

Thanks
Garrett.

I also read it only supports up to 32 ips. Does this mean I can only have 32 machines on the network. Thats not enough for me.

The built in DHCP Server on the netgear RT311 and RT314 only supports 32 DHCP IP's. You could disable it and use an alternative DHCP Server or use STATIC IP's inside your net if you have a need for more machines.

Make sure you get the RT314 if you plan on connecting a lot of machines to it, the 314 has a faster processor so it should be able to keep up (better) than the RT311 would with a large network behind it. (Besides you get 4 switched ports to uplink to on the RT314).

Everyone that I know loves this router except for one person that got it and could not get it to work... even with an hour of help from tech support. He ended up returning it and getting a LinkSys. I have heard tons of bad things about those. I think that he just got a bad box. Every once in a while, you are bound to get a lemon.

BTW, this is a fantastic deal at 85 shipped. It is super fast and made well. If they do get the port range forwarding in the next firmware... it is perfect!

I got this router from Staples last thursday and it has been working great. I originally pricematched with Outpost.com and it came to $116 with shipping. But I just called back and they credited me the difference so I got it for $85 too. This is a great deal!

Thanks Muffy!

Anyone know how to get Nortel VPN to work through the Barracade without placing the host inside the DMZ? I tried with both port and ranges but no luck.

I just called Staples and asked for pricematch. Without telling the rep about who I wanted to pricematch to, she said they could not pricematch the Amazon price because it's a different item. Was I just unlucky with that particular rep, or did anyone else have the same problem?

Staples is all about who you talk to. If you don't get a cooperative person the first time, try again. Mine did have to call me back since she did need to verify that they were the same item and that Amazon did have them in stock. It took about 15 minutes but she did call me back and delivered. 84.79 to my door on Friday.

OK, I was a little confused on the posts. I guess that you were talking about pricematching the Linksys at Amazon. Anyways, here's my question...I currently have an ISP and I may go cable modem sometime in the future. It therefore seems that the SMC cable/DSL router would be the way to go? I plan on hooking another PC in my son's room and connecting it with ethernet cable. Would I need to get an additional modem for his PC or could he access the net via my PC? Also, any recommendations on Ethernet cards, Linksys, SMC, D-Link, or does it matter. Thanks.

I don't know about all routers out there, but the Netgear RT314 will act as a switch, which is more than just a hub. 100mbps full-duplex.. etc.. etc..

No, we are talking about pricematching the NetGear RT314 from Staples with the NetGear RT314 from amazon.

Amazon currently has this router for 109.99 with free shipping. Staples is selling it for 169. Price match with Amazon and use a 30 off 100 coupon to get it to 79.99. Add your local sales tax and there you have it.
