you take your chances with refurb wireless routers. I've bought 6 or 7 refurb'd netgear 624/634 series wireless routers, and only 2 have worked properly. the other 4 or 5 have all had the same problem; they work for a few hours/days and then all of a sudden lose wireless connectivity or lose internet connection, and I have to manually restart the router (unplug/plug power cable). Then it tends to work a few more mins before doing the same thing. It seems to be a overheating problem because if I keep the router unplugged for the night then the router will work properly again in the morning, at least for a few days, then the same prob starts up again.

i hate these routers. Under heavy load it fails (doesn't take much). Its heats up and either slow down dramatically or disconnects you.

There seem to me a unlimited supply of these refurblish router, and i think that the reason for it.

Great price for router for you grandma, but there are better router at the cost of $10 more NEW. I dont recommend these version from netgear, add $10 more and get a better one.

Thanks for the warning, but please provide a link to the new better wireless router, priced at $10 more ($26 delivered with no rebate hassles)...... A quick search here showed nothing close to only $10 more. Best I found was more than twice the price "after rebate". (CC $50 + $3.50 tax - $20 rebate = $33.49).

kinda meant spend the extra buck and get a better one. these router are FINE for the price, but just be ready for some trouble shooting. light use = okay. 24/7 not so much.

Certain modem this router will work very well with but there are modem it refuse to keep WAN IP for long periods of time. If your using a PPPoE setup, i find it works best if you manually set it up through the router as well, dont relay on the router to pull the WAN IP from your modem effectively.

To aid in cooling, use the stand in a decent air flow area. Will increase it operation duration before it losses the WAN IP.

I 100% agree, it's a piece of ****** router. Doing anything heavy over wireless crashes it.

I have yet to get a fully usable netgear router. The wireless is always wonky no matter that computer I use.

I've had this router for a while... It's worked fine for the most part. I don't really have any problems with the wireless, but the moment you use bittorrent with a lot of peers the router will crash and disconnect.

Everything usually works fine after a power cycle, but it will crash again after about 15 minutes of torrenting. If you do anything that requires many connections, don't bother, but for the price, it's a decent backup

With all the problems reported here, sounds like a true defect "was" in these things.
Then in other forums, others are reporting they used this router problem free for years.
Seems some versions do not have problems.

Since this is a "true" factory refurbished unit, (unlike Newegg refurbs), there is a chance that a defect that affected many has been resolved and corrected during the "refurb" process.?.? From a component level technicians point of view, this does sound like one of those fixable issues.

i have a 624. I updated the firmware online once and the thing bricked. They sent me a new one and I just don't update it. It dies if I have too many bit torrent connections open.

I got one of these brand new a couple of weeks ago from CC, and I am yet to install it. All these negative reviews make me wonder if it will be just a waste of time.

Just finished setting up router yesterday, and 20 hours straight so far of maxed out torrent upload test using wireless (plus 3 wired + 2 more wireless systems conncted). . Works GREAT! All around MUCH better than my Buffalo WBR2-G54S.

Of course first installed the new firmware released last week or two.
v2.0.19_1.0.19NA

Today it is priced a buck less.

Edit. Out of stock now, and price back up to $16.

Not a big fan of these.
Wife and I were trying to use laptops within 15 feet of it, and it would only give one of us an IP address. I changed channels and it was better for some reason.
It worked for me, but never performed all that well. I think that I had to reboot it once a week.

I went with the WRT54GL and flashed it with DD-WRT and I haven't had to reboot since. Once I opened up the maximum IP connections, torrents are super fast.

I finally got around to set up mine. Works great so far.

Originally, I had a D-Link DI514(?) router which was taking brutal beating from 2.4GHz corless phones. I replaced it with a cheapo CompUSA wired router with most of my network plugged directly into it. I kept the D-Link connected to the wired router for Wi-Fi clients only.

Now the Netgear replaces both the wired router and the wireless router and seems to work better than either or both.

wow, I can't believe all the hate on these routers. I've had a WGR614 v4 for the last couple of years going 24/7 and I haven't had a problem with it at all. The wireless range is way better than the Linksys it replaced, and it just runs and does what it's supposed to do.

I'm not saying I don't believe you guys have had problems with them (with this many complaints there must be something to it), but there are some success stories out there, too.

People who have complaints tell an average of 9 people. Those who had no issues only tell 2. It's always going to be biased.
