Can I buy the cable with the jacks already on or do I have to crimp my own? and if i do my own, what's the configuration of the wires?

Just go to your local puter store and get an ethernet crossover cable. There a dime a dozen(so to speak). I'm not sure of the pinouts for the connectors. I have never made my own cables so I have no idea. Does anyone out there know the answer to this question? I would like to know for future reference.

I have only used crossover cables a few times... cannot remember the spec.. ok, I am getting out my book... it is:
Side 1
1 white/green
2 green
3 white/orange
4 blue
5 white/blue
6 orange
7 white/brown
8 brown

Side 2
1 white/orange
2 orange
3 white/green
4 blue
5 white/blue
6 green
7 white/brown
8 brown

For straight through just use "side 1" on each side. The only wires that really matter are the white/green, green, white/orange and orange wires. The rest are nothing.

Are u sure for straight use u use Side 1? Hmm... I make my own cables using a diagram from the manual of my NIC, and I always used the Side 2 configuration (I have a hub)... or is it OK to use either Side 1 or Side 2 as long as u use the same configuration on both ends?

Thanks for the help, guys. One more thing, how about the transfer rate, is it a bit slower without the hub?

I have a generic 9-port hub if you wanna pay $5+shipping for it. I know this isn't a for sale thread, but I REALLY don't need it and just feel nice Course I just got laid too, so that might be helping Sorry if this shouldn't be posted...

Yes to "or is it OK to use either Side 1 or Side 2 as long as u use the same configuration on both ends" That will work, but youshould try to keep everything the same for simplicity... especially if you have a standard cable you just bought from a store. That will confuse you later as it did to me when I first started making my own cables. I ended up redoing all mine just so I would not have to think again about it.

I have two machines network together using a hub. It appears the transfer rate is alot faster going one direction than the other. Both machines have the same nic which is 10/100. They are both running win98 and have basically the same setup. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is?
