About a week ago I did something stupid and now the listing in the device manager for my network card has a #2 after it. How do I go about correcting my stupid mistake? I'm running windows 2000 and the nic is a 3com card.

On a related note since this happened I have been getting errors in my event viewer about rasctrs failing and the windows installer is failing with the message "Failed to connect to server. Error: 0x80080005" in the application log. Because of this I can not install or uninstall applications that use msi files. Is this problem related to the first problem? I suspect it is but I'm not sure. Any help would be appreciated.

Bleh... I fought with a device issue like that once and it was a PITA. There was some flag I flipped somewhere that allowed me to see "hidden devices". I found this page that mentions hidden devices, but I don't honestly remember if that's what I did, nor am I certain that's your problem. It's a good shot, though. Try that and see if the other problems clear up.

edit: I guess I'm not really being clear - the reason you've got the "#2", most likely, is that there's a "phantom" network card installed on the system. If you reveal the hidden devices, you should be able to see the original "#1" card, remove it, remove the #2 as well, then reinstall the card and be back to normal.

When you have to reinstall the network card, XP remembers everytime you do it. I worked on a system that the person was having troubles, so he kept trying to remove and reinstall the drivers. He was up to card #9 by the time I got to it.

Your problem(s) are likely not related, you may be able to eliminate your Windows Installer issue by visiting microsoft's website and downloading/reinstalling the Windows installer.

As for your NIC exactly why is this an issue? It isnt going to hurt the way Windows runs just because it identifies it as the second NIC you've installed on this machine.
