I have the DLink 323 NAS w\ 2 x 750Gb SATA....actually formatted in Ext3 (for VMware vmdk's), has usb and 1gb ethernet connection...only trouble is you need the software to map to the NAS, other than that, it also has FTP. As for access outside your LAN, then you would have to have it on the DMZ or use port forwarding on FTP to the NAS
Check out Drop.io. It's free for 100MB, or $10/yr/GB for more storage. That's going to be cheaper than any NAS out there, and you get a TON more features.
Edit: Oops! You said TB! In that case, I believe most NAS's support FTP.
I have the same question, Toms Hardware has a review for a Maxtor NAS with Raid 0 & 1 but a bad user interface. I have never used a WD My Book what kind of backup software do they have. I am looking for something that is easy to configure security so I can store Quicken files on it.
I use a freenas system I built myself out of an older sempron 754, has 1TB right now, going 3TB next year. I have it on gigbyte network. freenas allows FTP/SAMBA/UFS/RSYNC etc. So it can act as win xp network neighborhood or something Linux can see as native. Everything can be seen on the internet if you wish and expose it through your router.
Freenas probably is more feature rich than a NAS box since it's got about a dozen protocol built in. Only down side is you need to have a free computer for it to use as server. Admin of the system is via web page which again can be seen on internet if you wish. has great authentication features for access protection.
Thanks Nyker96 but I definitely do not want another PC, I used to have a file server and I want a nice little appliance that is quiet and easy to turn off and on.
I have looked at Toms and Newegg and it appears WD has a bad interface and has bad reviews on BestBuy.com and a friend recommended Iomega but those come with a hard drive and do not support Raid1, which i don't necessarily need. D Link can be had for under $200 without hard drives but supports 2 drives and has a print server. The downside is some issues with people who add a HD and want Raid1 and formatting. I would do Raid 1 from the start so no issue there. I guess I will wait for a good deal with black friday coming up or a new revision and take the plunge.
