What is a better network card? one that built into the motherboard or a separte expansion network card? my motherboard came built in with the nvida lan firewall network card and it also has the realtek rtl8169/8110 gigabit network card built in.
In most cases a built-in one is better. Some of the better boards have built in ones that aren't linked to the PCI bus but rather to the Northbridge or Southbridge directly freeing up bandwidth for other PCI devices.
This depends heavily upon the O/S, board, NIC, and driver.
I'm not a huge fan of Nvidia's network interfaces so I couldn't speculate much about your scenario, but I've had a case where on-board NICs couldn't handle 50kpps (Broadcom gigabit), but its PCI equivalent could. Pulling one processor out of the machine and booting a SMP kernel brought performance to almost equal levels though. I know it had much to do with interrupts, but I'll admit I don't know enough to comment past that.
