Network Config File

I had some trouble with a few different Linux Distros not setting up my cable internet connection properly most
probably due to my inexperience. Is
there a file like grub.conf or fstab that I can edit to fix whatever incorrect input I typed in during Installation?
I have used the ifconfig command and that's exactly the info I have to edit.

/etc/sysconfig/network on atleast one ditro (RH 7.something I think). Probably different for each distro.

Thanks for pointing me to it. Wish I posted sooner. Would have saved an hour of frustration. Now if I could
figure out why Mandrake10 sees my hard drive as hdc and all others see it correctly as hde. I knew I should
have gotten into Linux thru the front door but the back door was opened and it was deceptively easier.
