network file transfer problem

Finally, got my home network working, using win 98se with two other laptops, both with Win Me. The file / internet server is running Win 98 SE.

Problem:

Whenever I try to copy files between the server and the other laptops, the server crashes and I get the blue screen of death. The message reads: VXD VFAT01 fatal error
Then the server freezes and or reboots. Any ideas?

I have file sharing / print sharing turned on and am using AVG antivirus and Zone alarm pro firewall. If I shut down the zone alarm, it still crashes.

What network protocols should I have installed? Currently, I'm using TCP/IP and IPX/SPX.

Thanks.

Turn off your antivirus software and see what happens. Also check your firewall logs and make sure a certain system isn't doing something to upset the firewall, thus causing a crash. Other than that I don't know what else could be going wrong.

Thanks for the response. I did try to shut down the firewall. Why would the antivirus cause a network error? What's a vxd vfat01 error?
Would a DMA setting on the harddrive cause this?
Would reinstalling Windows fix this problem?
Are all VXD problems with the OS?
Thanks again.

<< something with FAT tables.

my guess would be the virus software.
>>

why do you think it's the antivirus? Shouldn't the antivirus software warn me about something happening? Why would it cause a shutdown / reboot?

Thanks

Bah. I get VxD errors all the d**n time on my 98SE laptop. :disgust: I'm taking it to 2k Pro when I get the time. If that's an option for you, I'd suggest it. Once I went to 2k Pro I've had very few problems and really haven't looked back.

This is painful.
Thanks

You need TCP/IP if you connect to the internet (among other things). You need IPX for Novell network functions ( so my guess is you don't need it). Windows uses netbios for establishing the computer connections (which you have no choice about so you don't see it listed).
Are the file transfers being initiated from the server or from the laptop?

Found this at German forum: If I larger data sets over LAN pull get I the error message VXDCache01und VFat01.

"Virtual Device Drivers (VxDs) run as part of the privileged (ring-0) operating system. VxDs can be thought of as a DLL for the operating system. = Running at ring 0, VxDs have complete access to the physical hardware, and can access data in the address space of any DOS, Windows, or Protected Mode application." -from comp.os.ms-windows.programmer.vxd Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

so it could be problem with your NIC drivers, or MOBO drivers ( especially if you are using new hardware built after Win98 was released).

As a point of correction, NetBIOS rides on top of IP, IPX or NetBEUI. It's not a protocol of it's own, that's why it is not listed.

Do you happen to be overclocking your server? That can cause some oddities in the PCI bus that some NIC's have a problem with and cause errors.

I would recommend you first download the latest drivers for your NIC from the Internet. Delete the NIC and re-install it using the very latest drivers.

Also, try a scandisk and make sure there aren't any errors on the drive that might be causing issues.

Can you open up the file you're trying to copy directly on the server? Make sure it's not actually corrupted on the disk.

Try to delete File and Printer sharing and then re-install it and re-share you drives. Might be something odd with that.

For a brief look at VxD errors, try here. They're basically device drivers and are based on 'old' code; mine usually fail at startup. Win 2k Pro avoids these problems.

Thanks for everyone's input.
What network protocols should I have?

Sounds like I should try and reload the NIC's. BTW, I have two NIC's in the computer, one for internet cable modem access, and the other to get into the home LAN.

Anyone else have a solution or explanation why I get VXD crashes?
Thanks
