Network Performance with WinProxy

One more question:

When I play streaming videos on a Win98 PC connected to my cable modem I get around 300kb/s. When I run WinProxy 3.0 and play the same video on that system performance drops to about 150kb/s.
When I close WinProxy, the performance goes back up.

Is this normal for proxies servers? Can you recommend any tweaks to make this faster for the other clients on the network?

As far as I know, any Proxy Server will slow down network traffic, so yes, this is normal. I think it might have something to do with the extra processing that takes place on each packet as it passes through the proxy. As far as tweaking it, I am not sure how you would do that.

I am using WinProxy 3.0R1i with ADSL. I don't see a slow down with WinProxy. I often see 600 - 700 kb/sec when doing downloads. I am runing a K6-3 450 with 256MB ram on the WinProxy PC.

Hmm...my proxy PC is a K6-2 at 380Mhz. I wonder if that's the problem? Not fast enough?

I'm using the same version you are. I recently rebuilt that system (loaded a clean install of Win98, etc.).

A K6-2 380 is PLENTY fast for use as a proxy/firewall/etc. That's not your problem. I'm running proxy & firewall software on a K6-2 300 with crappy PC Chips motherboard, and notice almost no slowdown whatsoever. The machine is running Linux, but that really shouldn't matter. Even a slow Pentium (such as a P133) should be able to provide proxy/firewall functionality with little or no speed degredation -- even with Windows 98, as long as you're not running low on RAM.

I think I figured it out. For some reason I can't get WinProxy 3.0 R1i to work with PCI NICs!

I've tried multiple mobo's (ASUS and SOYO) and multiple NICs (Linksys and 3COM) and I cant get it to work reliably.

I'm now using two Dlink ISA cards and it works great!

I've submitted this question to WinProxy - hopefully they can make my higher performance PCI NICs work with their software.

I switched to the router (netgear RT311) because winproxy was hard to setup and allow both internet axcess and games to work right. (had to use DHCP for internet and ip addresses for games. was to hard to setup , they gave me a refund. I don't notice any slow down with the router. just my two cents..

I always heard it was better to keep your proxy/firewall on a complety differnet box. and also have your fileserver on a different box as well.
