I had my network up and running a few days ago, and I wanted to download something from another computer. My network consistes of two computers, connected via two GVC 10/100 PCI network cards and a crosswire RJ-45 cable. When I downloaded the folder, it was going really slow (It said it would take 53 minutes for a 153 megabyte folder. I came back an hour after and it said there was 45 minutes left) So I uninstalled the drivers for the network card and then re-installed it.

All of the sudden the other computer doesent show up in the Network Neighbourhood anymore. What is odd though, is that if I go to Start...Find...Computer and I type in the name of the other computer, I can get into it, access it's files, etc... I think Windows thinks that the other computer is on a different workstation but this is impossible since I set my workstation to MICRON1 and his too. I've removed and re-added the adapter and protocols on both computers but to no avail. What am I doing wrong??

Try making it so that the computers themselves are named different things, and have the workgroup the same on both of them. What netvork protocols have you installed? Have you installed the same ones on both computers?

The computers ARE named different things and the workstation is the same name. I have the following installed:

Client for Microsoft Networks
10/100 PCI Ethernet Card
Dial-Up Adapter
IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol ->10/100 PCI Ethernet Card
IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol ->Dial-Up Adapter
TCP/IP ->10/100 PCI Ethernet Card
TCP/IP ->Dial-Up Adapter
File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks

Could this be a bad cable? I AM able to access his computer. If I go to start...run and then type in his computer name (I.E \\computer1) it will access his hard drive, I just cant see him in network neighbourhood. Could this still be a cable problem?

You mean the WORKGROUP is the same name? It's possibly a bad cable. Try pinging, are there lost packets? What ping times do you get? It should be <10 ms.

As far as Network Neighborhood goes, don't rely on that. You're dealing with master browser elections, refresh times, etc. It's almost guaranteed that on a Windows network that doesn't have at least one NT Server running that there will be NetHood lag.

Also, definitely remove IPX from the DialUp adapter and unless you need IPX for legacy game support, remove it from the NIC also.

Get rid of unneeded protocols.

If you don't need IPX on your dial up adapter, delete it.

In the properties for IPX, specifiy a FRAME TYPE on both PCs (I usually use 802.2 out of habit). Make sure you are specificying IP addresses and subnet masks for TCP/IP on your network adapter, if nothing else is assigning them. If you don't know what to use, use 192.168.0.1 for one, and 192.168.0.2 for the other. Set the subnet masks to 255.255.255.0 for both.

In the properties for the network cards, lock them at whatever speed you'd like. If you're connecting both directly, you should be able to lock them at 100TX/FULL DUPLEX.

Make sure you are using the absolute latest drivers for your network cards. VERY IMPORTANT. Most cheap cards use Realtek chipsets. if yours uses a generic chipset like Realtek, I'd recommend using their drivers instead of GVCs.

Cable problems can cause poor performance, but other than that your problem sounds like a configuration/driver issue.

I choose not to respond to that.. Doh!

hehe, I didn't mean that as an insult, sorry if you took it that way.

The thing is, I kindof expected you to know that. I guess I assume too much.

I have a problem with my setup too. I have two computers with win98se installed on both machines. They both have windows client, Netbeui and TCP/IP protocols installed. The transfer speed from one to the other seems to be alot faster than from the other one over. I mean it takes a lot time to even do see what's on the hard disk on the other computer. What is the problem? Can anyone help?
