I've been looking at my network settings and was wondering if they are responsible for my too-long bootup sessions. I'd like to trim them down if possible. Here's what they are:

Client for Microsoft Networks
Dial-Up Adapter
Dial-Up Adapter #2 (VPN Support)
Microsoft Virtual Private Networking Adapter
Motorola SurfBoard 4100 USB Cable Modem
NDISWAN -> Microsoft Virtual Private Networking Adapter
NetBEUI -> Dial-Up Adapter
NetBEUI -> Dial-Up Adapter #2 (VPN Support)
NETBEUI -> Motorola SurfBoard 4100 USB Cable Modem
TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter
TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter #2 (VPN Support)
TCP/IP -> Motorola SurfBoard 4100 USB Cable Modem

Primary Network Logon:
Windows Logon

I occasionally use dialup, and I have only 1 connectoid so I don't know why there are 2. Can I remove some of this stuff? It is the only computer in the house and not on any network.
Thanks!

I'm SO confused! Why is NetBEUI in that picture at all, and how does it get bound to a dial-up adapter??? I'm presuming that some automatic installation feature from your ISP configured things like that, but I don't have a clue as to why. I'm no Windows networking guru, being rather new to Windows, but I thought NetBEUI was not redirectable?

Someone please help morkinva and put me out of my misery!

Is the cable modem always connected, or does it only connected when you start the computer? (I've never worked with one of these USB modems before.) If it connects when the computer cranks up, perhaps it's slowing the whole process down while it awaits the assignment of an IP addy?

First, are you in a network??? If not, go ahead and kill NetBeui. That protocol is used in a peer to peer setting. I dont see why it is there. As for the dial up connections, your surfboard might have installed the second one (VPN Support). I would leave it alone. Ape Out.

Are you using a via chipset prior to the kt-266a? Which OS are you running? If you are running a via chipset, try leaving the cable modem unplugged until it boots, then plugging it in, or try a powered usb hub. I don't think your network settings have anything to do with your boot up time.

You don't need NetBeui for your SB Modem. It's non-routable without a big headache so Im' pretty sure you could just remove that. You could probably get rid of one of those dial-ups too. If you remove both and reboot I believe one of them should come back.

Well I removed some stuff and all seems okay. Here's what I have now:

Client for Microsoft Networks
Dial-Up Adapter
Motorola SurfBoard 4100 USB Cable Modem
TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter
TCP/IP -> Motorola SurfBoard 4100 USB Cable Modem

I now remember where the netbeui came from. It was several years ago when I followed some instructions from steve gibson, grc.com. It had something to do with installing netbeui for security purposes or something. It's actually been that long since I've had to reinstall windows so I forgot.

Anyway, thanks to all for your help!

Heh-heh. Yeah, they were probably suggesting using NetBEUI strictly for the purposes of local area network file and print sharing. When you handle all local file and print sharing via a non-redirectable protocol like NetBEUI then you've eliminated an entire class of risks associated with binding NetBIOS to TCP/IP.

Hope things are working better now.
