ok i'm going absolutely nutts over this. I'm running through various cisco labs, but just CANNOT get a switch and a router to communicate....

Network topology map is HERE

basically, if i go onto the router and try pinging 11.0.0.2 (the switch's connected interface) or 11.0.0.10 (the switch's IP) i get no response. same is true vice versa- I cannot get any response on the switch when i ping the router's 11.0.0.1 port.

When i set the ip for the PC, what would i make its default gateway? would it be the switch's ip address, the switch's interface ip address, or the router's interface ip address?!

so confused... as you can see. any help would be great

used the 2501 for the router and 1912 for the switch. don't think the 1912 is a L3 switch....

You're using the 1912 or 1912c? Do you have the router plugged into the 100BaseTx ports? What's the output of the commands?

Router:

sh ip int brief
sh run

Switch:

sh port
sh run

These would help...

hey phatrabt, thanks for the help... somehow the example i had given just suddenly started workign when i changed the ip address of the switch. i don't get when you can and when you can't set an ip address on an interface of a switch. like in this new example (HERE) i cannot set ip addresses on the interfaces of switch's 1 and 2, but i can set it on switch 3.

could you just help me out, from the start- as to how i can get a network liek this up and running? what i'm thinking is say, a 2 floor building with a network, each floor having its own switch (Switch 1 and 2) which is hooked to a master switch (Switch 3) which is hooked ot the router, which is hooked ot th enet or whatever. now is this even the correct method or should each floor have a router?

the process i did so far (and it doesnt' work at all) (probably easier if you draw this out )

on router:
- enabled the port that hooks to switch 3 (masterswitch), set its ip address to 192.168.1.1

on master switch:
- enabled ports to switches 1 and 2, and to the router. set ip of port to router to 192.168.1.2, and then set the ips for ports to switches 1 and 2 to 10.0.0.1 and 11.0.0.1 respectively

on switches 1 and 2:
- set the ips for the switch (not for the interface, i can't do that as i said- for the switch itself) to 10.0.0.2 and 11.0.0.2 respectively.

on pcs:
- gave them an ip, set their default gateway to the ip's of their respected switches (switches 1 or 2).

absolutely nothing works...

Well, off the top of me head, you would just want to use VLANs, VS trying to setup Layer3 routing on your switches.

Assuming two floors in this example, with one router and two switches (one on each floor):

1) - Assign IP to f0/0 port of Router
- Connect to Switch1 (I generally use the last port available, that's not a trunk port)
- Connect hosts to Switch1
- Assign VLANs as required, based on design
2) - Assign IP to f0/1 port of Router
- Connect to Switch2 (same as above)
- Connect hosts to Switch1
- Assign VLANs as required, based on design

IP addressing scheme to be determined by the architect (assuming yourself).

That's the simplest way really, if you have hosts on two separate floors. If separate VLANs aren't required, then you knock a step off each section.

Of course, i could be oversimplifying, but I think it's OK... Spidey'll kick me in the head if I'm out to lunch anyways..
