Network Speed Problem

So if I take the same computer and I hook it up wired to my new Verizon FIOS service I get a 15 Megabit connection according to the speakeasy bandwidth test. If I unplug the wired connection and connect with a wireless card (right next to the unit!) and make a strong 54 megabit wireless connection, I only get 6 Megabits on the speakeasy bandwidth test.

I think that's rather normal. I know for a fact that wireless will not be the same or even close to wired internet.

Try updating your wireless card drivers. I can hit 10Mbits/s on my schools wireless network, I have a 54G card.

in the real world, 802.11 G caps around 10Mb/s total throughput. The rest is eaten up by other clients/networks/interference and overhead.

Here are is another suggestion that might help, try changing the channel that your wireless runs on. If you are still running on channel 6, chances are that you are seeing co-channel interference from other APs. I would try using channel 1 or 11 to see if the performance improves.

If you're using Windows before Vista, you could try setting the TcpWindowSize.

E.g.

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
TcpWindowSize=373760

A reboot is needed for this setting to take effect.
