I just recently bought a wireless g usb adapter. When plugged it in, I saw that there was a wireless network without and security. i connected to it and could surf the web. Can i keep doing this without being detected?

Yes...until the owner of the wireless network looks at his logs. Then he'll know that someone was using it.

Technically, yes, you probably could. The fact that it is illegal probably doesn't make any difference, though, does it?

Seriously, besides using your neighbor's property (their wireless router) without permission, most ISPs have policies stating that their connections cannot be shared between multiple homes and could be grounds for the ISP to disconnect the neighbor's Internet service...

The ISP can never detect the packets are coming from different sources, as the router multiplexes everything together. And in any case, how would an ISP ever know if a connection is shared between multiple homes, or just multiple computers in the same home

It is possible to determine if someone is using NAT.

but it's not possible (for the ISP) to know if a wireless client connecting thru a wireless router belongs to the same household or to the neighbour.

and that is the point - using IP masquarading is legal, and even if the usage of it is detectable, it's still not detectable what is it that you are masquarading - that is, the identities of the PCs sharing the connection.

i'm not trying to cause any trouble to my neighbor.........just trying to get away with what i can. Since you guys have said that the HSI provider won't know, my neibhbor's service should not be affected. So back to main question, is it really *easy* for my neighbor to tell if i'm using is service to browse like 15 min a day??

yes, if he knows what he's doing & how to view the IP's of the devices connecting to the SSID. Or possible the routers logs

Um, if the person has a wide open AP, I doubt he knows much of anything except that he can now magically surf the net on his laptop.

Even if he checks the logs, he won't know who's computer is connected unless you give him your MAC or computer name

if the dolt that left wireless access point wide open is dumb enough to do that, then they are probably not smart enough to determine if you are connected, other than perhaps to see the wireless light blinking on the router when they know their wireless PC is turned off. Then again, that might not even be enough of a clue for them.

Some NAT and/or DHCP tables on routers will show computer names. So, if you (you as in wireless hijacker) have a fairly incriminating computer name...like say...YOUR NAME....it can show up on the router.
