networking advise

I need some help with a wireless/wired network my friend and I are going to be setting up at his house ..

here is the scenario, we have 2 computers in the basement - both network capable right now (currently using an internet gateway set up)

1 computer on the 2nd floor of the house that needs to be wirelessly connected to the computers in the basement

I am fairly compitent with a wired network, but I have no idea what I am doing with a wireless one !!!

also, the network in the basement needs to be able to support more computers that (just need some open ports on a hub/router)

1) this should be in the networking forum. it will most likely get moved or locked

2) sounds like you need a wireless gateway. something like what i have, an SMC barricade

basically, you get a wireless router with some hard-wired ports. so you could hard wire the computers in the basement, and have multiple wireless computers access from any floor

Either get a Wireless Access Point, or two (2) wireless cards. With the 2 cards you can set them up in ad hoc mode and have them connect to each other. I dont think this is as secure as having the access point is, but Im not positive since I havent done this.

If you had posted this in Networking, JackMDS probably would have answered this question like he does so many others, with a couple quick links. Please use the little search option at the top of each forum, and maybe take a look at the FAQs. They could possibly save you a lot of time and headaches

I need the computer on the wireless connection to be able to access files and printers located on the wired network, so I dont think just a wireless router will work .. any other suggestions?

yes it will work actually. i happen to do that right now on my home network.

it involves mapping IP's through lmhosts, but is quite easy to do

I never said a wireless router. But you could use one just fine. A Wireless Access Point should work just fine. Like I said, do a search, the function is there for a reason
