I vote for the dish antenna idea, super simple and cheap to set up using USB devices, simple enough for most any person to accomplish.

If you're looking for a fun and exotic way though I would suggest wireless optical, but you need near perfect LOS.

Homemade gear, easy enough to build, cost you around 200$, only 10mb/sec sadly.

Not really to save Money. My friend who is renting my Moms old House down the drive-way is stuck with Dial-Up.

Since this House is close by the road it can get Cable Internet. Can't get DSL here either. Which is strange because across the road can?

He called to get Cable Internet but they won't install it. His Cell reception sucks so he can't get something like Clear.

He wants to be able to watch streaming video & such. He plans to stay there for at least a few years.

Plus so we can do networking of files too.

If this is going to be for at least a couple years, then consider investing in some outdoor rated WiFi Bridges. Just DON'T go cheap and skip installing lightning traps!
This place sells bundled kits that should do the job. *IF* the 2 houses are close enough *AND* no obstructions, try to get 5.8Ghz bridges. If you have obstructions, they also have some "non line of sight" stuff, but it gets $$$$

I have used a pair of these:
http://www.l-com.com/item.aspx?id=22335
Grounded with #8 copper to a pair of 6' ground rods. You can strap to an existing ground rod pair.

Wire was CAT5E riser in conduit all the way, and certifies as such, and handles gigabit all the way out to the 328 feet and more.
It is not cheap but it is permanent, safe, reliable.

An update....

They had to call a Qwest engineer in Denmark to get DSL. Were in a small area across the water from Seattle. The website said it wasn't available. Customer service said it wasn't available. I told my friend to ask the people in engineering, tech, the installers.

Cable company said they were 400ft and wouldn't service them. When they came out to install service a few Months ago.

The Power-line network did offer 1-2 megs a second but because of the distance it didn't like other things being plugged in the wall. It works fast and great in my house of course with other things being plugged in the wall as well.

So yeah they got 1.5mbps DSL for $14 for 6 Months. I think that's the fastest they will offer them.

So yeah they finally are out of the dark ages.

Think they should bother with the Cable company again? Talk directly to an engineer or see if faster DSL is available.

I'm probably a little late to the thread, but how about a pair of these?

http://www.ubnt.com/nanostation

My cousin was able to successfully connect his house and his friends house almost 10 miles away using this (line of sight of course). 400 ft should be no problem with these even with some foilage blocking the path.
