There are several situations where there is no passive converter between RJ-45 and DB9.
Also, there is no standard for RS-232 over UTP that I am aware of. In that case, the brand of equipment will be necessary.

If its T-1 / PRI, I can look it up.
Cisco Console cable, no big.
If its localtalk to ethernet. No Dice. (Real Router)
If its Token Ring to Ethernet, (real) Router.
If its T-1 to ethernet, ...

I had a co-worker that wanted to make a magic cable from Localtalk to Token ring for a client. He simply did not believe that since both had DB9 connectors, that they were not electrically compatible. I gave him an I.D. ten T award for his efforts.

Let us know what it is and who makes it and we can probably answer.

Hope this helps;

Doug

This is from memory so please double check this before terminating this connector.

PIN -------|------ PIN

RJ45 -----|----- DB9
1 ----------------8 (CTS)
2 ----------------6 (DSR)
3 ----------------2 (RxD)
4 ----------------5 (GND)
5 ----------------5 (GND)
6 ----------------3 (TxT)
7 ----------------4 (DTR)
8 ----------------7 (RTS)

No you won't burn anything. This is really just a data port. But no point in throwing darts at it

By looking within the link spidey gave you, my DB9 pin configuration is correct. But like we all said, it boils down to your "specific" hardware model. You will know you did good when you get a reply from AT or #status
