I've decided that i have to network 2 comps and a labtop. I don't want a wireless because i don't have that much money to spend. First couple of questions

I have dsl in my athlon750 system and with networking can i share my dsl with my labtop and other comp? will the speed reduce if i can?

Whats the diffrence between comps beign connected through networks and through lans?which is best for gaming?

With networks can i save something from one comp to the other or/and can I use a file in another computer without having to save it in the computer?

Can you guys plz help me choose a really good networking kit pls. Thanks

if you want to share your DSL and network your computers... then you'll need a cable modem / DSL router.. perferablly with a 4 port switching hub built in..

<< Whats the diffrence between comps beign connected through networks and through lans >>

well LAN stands for local area network... so.. you guessed it, they are the same

<< I have dsl in my athlon750 system and with networking can i share my dsl with my labtop and other comp? will the speed reduce if i can? >>

yes the speed will reduce assuming they all are using bandwidth at that specific moment in time.

<< With networks can i save something from one comp to the other or/and can I use a file in another computer without having to save it in the computer? >>

yes you can use resources on other computers... for example.... one computer can have a zip/cdr and you can just pull files through the LAN to that rig and burn the data there. or if your a business guy and you take the laptop to work. you can have all the computers drop the word processing doc into the laptops "my documents" folder...

well... i'd suggest the linksys router i'm not sure what the model number is... but it does have that 4 port switching hub built in... a big plus...

after that... all you'd need would be a USB or PCMCIA nic for the laptop and a PCI or ISA nic for the other computer....

i'm not sure if they a specific kit for what your looking to do... but it's easily done with a credit card, little buy.com or onvia, and a little coupon action

I have 3 comps networked using a kit I bought at least a year or more ago.
Itis NetGear by bay networks 10/100 with 4 port hub and cables, it originally was for two comps and I bought a linksys PCI NIC and another cable and added the third. I do not know about DSL but I do have cable internet and modem uplinked. Everything works just fine and can share cdroms, zip drives, printers etc. Did get bit tricky adding the third comp since I did not want to pay for another IP from the cable Co..I had to leave the settings in tact for the @home network. And add a second TCPIP binding with the standard 192.168.0.1----2---3. and all is well.
I like my netgear just fine and paid about $100 for it back then, so it should be pretty cheap now. And yes it is PCI.

heres how it performs on RC5
