I have two PC's Networked with:

2 Linksys Etherfast 10/100 NIC's
1 Linksys 10/100 Hub

Both NICs have TCP/IP and NetBEUI binded to them and. I login to the network when I start the computer and then when I go to Network Neighborhood I only see the Computer that I am working at.

The first computer has Windows ME installed adn the other has Windows 98SE installed. I see this problem regularly. Sometime it will work, most times it won't. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?

Have you enabled File and Print sharing on both systems? Have you shared any folders on either machine? What are the IP's to the machines? Do they have the same subnet mask?

Yes, I have all of those things on. One Machine's IP is 10.1.x.x and the other's is 10.1.x.x they bother have file and print sharing turned on and the HD's are being shared. yes their subnet mask is equla as well (255.255.255.0).

What a coincedence! At this very moment it is working fine again. Who know tommorow it might go out again! This is what has been happening, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I don't know! I just don't know!

Anyway, thanks for your suggestions.

It can take 2 networked, windows based, PC's several seconds to a minute to decide who is going to be the Browse Master. Your ME machine is probably going to be the BM. So if you are bringing both of them up at the same time, give it 15 to 20 seconds before you try browsing. You should be able to ping the other instantly though. I give all mine the same workgroup name too. They like a feeling of belonging.

urhmmm... first of all, I hope that you are on an intranet with only yourself and you dog for 400 miles.
DO NOT TURN OF FILE AND PRINT SHARING if you get on the internet!!!!!!! if you still want to, please give me your ip number and I will glady crack your share password with anyone of the many exploits there are to.

anyways......

file and print sharing turned on doesn't matter if you want to see each other computers and yourself via networkneighborhood. I know that for a fact. I am not sure why you don't see yourself in their, but linksys.com has manualls to make you be able to be seen.

if you want some help email me and I will look up info (i have documents at home concerning this)

thanks-lee

Ah well, thanks for your replies.

So is this an ongoing problem? I know what you're trying to say and everybody else mentioned some good points but I don't understand why it happens one day and gone the next day. To me, it seems kind of odd.

Next time you can't see the other workstations, check to see if the "link" light is on either the NIC or the hub/switch. If not, you may have a flaky 10BaseT cable or a bad port on your network gear. If all else fails, download the new drivers for your NICS. If things still are not right, maybe you have a IRQ issue. Make sure your NICS are not sharing IRQ with any other devices and make sure that your IRQ is above 10 for your NIC. If this still don't fix the problem, remove the NICs from your computer and Windows and reinstall with the new drivers and protocols (you really only need TCP/IP). Also, when you can't see the other workstation, try to PING it!

There was a thread about that sometimes ago. Somebody suggested to map a drive to the other computer then it's gonna show up each time.
Another thing is win98 and win98se don't see each other sometimes, maybe it's the same thing with win ME (He, it's Microsoft, things can only get worse)
