hey i have a wired/wireless network at my house, the main computer which is connected to the router and the internet is wired and another desktop and a laptop are wirelessly connected. i am having no problem establishing a conection to the internet on any of the machienes which is good, but now i have decided that i want to share the files between the computers which i am having some trouble doung. on the main computer i cannot see any of the other machienes in the workgroup, on the other desktop i can see all the other computers but when i try and access either of the other two it comes up with an error saying i do not have permission please contact the system admin(don't you love it how it says that haha, i am the system admin...anyway) i have run all the network wizards etc which all seem to be working but i just can't get onto the other computers which i am finding quite odd. also the fact that 1 computer can see the others but the other 2 can't see any

any help would be much appreciated.

thanks in advance

Are both devices the same make? i.e both linksys or netgear or dlink? Can you also draw up a quick diagram in paint and attach it. Include current IP info for each machine as well if possible. Ill take it from there.

ok i think this is right...well this is what my router says anyway

Main Comp: IP Address: 192.168.1.64
Desktop: IP Address: 192.168.1.66
Laptop: IP Address: 192.168.1.65

for the main comp my router says that, but when i went to a web page and got my ip it was: 203.122.208.215

so i dunno...i'm lost but if you know what that means, thats all good...

Cheers

ok well my main computer cannot find the actual workgroup it says "work group AAAA is not accessible, you might not have permission to use this network resource...the list of servers for the workgroup is not currently avaliable."

but when i go on either of the other two computers they can both find the work group and it displays the other computer names...but when i try to connect to any of them it says //Laptop is not avaliable or what eva you might not have permission to use this network resource...

any help much appreciated cheers for that site before, i had a look but it didn't appear to solve my problem.

ignore network neigborhood, it's craptastic at its best. use ping and unc paths to establish/verify connectivity. Here is what I would do

1. Sync usernames/passwords. Either the same logged in on all 3, or at least the same used on machine 2 on machines 1 and 3 (even if it's not used). So username1, 2, and 3 exsists on computer 1, 2, and 3 with the same password
2. Can you ping ->No, turn off firewalls (esp windows built in)
3. can you ping -> No, start checking physical layer, then move to IP stuff
3 ->Yes, try to get to \\computer1\some_sharename_here from another machine and see if it works

"for the main comp my router says that, but when i went to a web page and got my ip it was: 203.122.208.215 "

That's your routers IP, the WAN address. Totally irrelevant to local network browsing issues.

Resetting your TCP/IP stack will have zero effect but if you feel like it, netsh int ip reset [log_file_name] from a command prompt. Again, useless but you can do it there.

I haven't read Jack's webpage tutorials but I imagine they probably do actually solve your problem. If you'd like to look at other resources google window file sharing walkthroug tutorial. Plenty of hold your hand sites out there that will give you step by step instructions. The basics, make sure something is shared and if your not running simple file sharing make sure user accounts are setup and permissions are set properly. Simple file sharing should take care of permissions and accounts though admittedly I have no experience with simple file sharing. If your running XP pro you shouldn't be running it anyway IMO. If your running Home I don't believe you can turn it off. Again, no experience with the consumer based windows installations, XP home.

It sounds like you need to make the workgroup the same for all of them. Are the workgroup the same, or different for the different computers?
