I just got the axe about two hours ago.

I have 9 years of analytical chemistry experience. Three years of supervisory experience and a bit over three years of project management experience.

How in the hell does one become a consultant?

I just started with Lockheed Martin STS in Akron last Monday as a Hardware Engineer Associate. STS & MS2 brought in 6 or so more on the 15th. Word is that STS will be looking for 80 or so more if a big contract is approved (should know pretty soon), mostly electrical and computer engineers. I'm too new from college to get a referral bonus, so here are the standard links:

New college grads/co-op students:
http://www.lockheedmartinjobs.com/jobsearch_college.asp

Those with experience:
http://www.lockheedmartinjobs.com/jobsearch_all.asp

I found it best (for me) to only select a state for searches to see what is out there. It took a month or so to be contacted, but I was able to interview within 2 days of speaking to a recruiter and an engineering manager, and things moved pretty quickly from there. I am 33 and new to engineering (11 years USAF linguist). My officemate is in his 50s (experienced engineer) and started the same day I did.

Good luck everyone.

Job below forwarded by a co-alumni. PM me if interested and I can put you in touch with the right person.

Department Marketing Statement
The Biotherapeutics and Bioinnovation Center (BBC) is the newest division within Pfizer and is focused on translating biomedical discoveries into new medicines. The BBC can be described as a federation of small, biotech research units, each focused on a novel and growing area of biotechnology and utilizing it to develop new medicines. The BBC also aggressively pursues bioinnovation through collaborations with world-class academic, public-sector and private-sector institutions in areas of emerging science to accelerate research and to develop medicines across a wide range of therapeutic areas focusing on satisfying unmet medical needs for patients. The BBC represents an innovative operating model for Pfizer and the pharmaceutical industry, as it brings the best features of venture capital, entrepreneurship and pharmaceutical scale together in one place for the first time.

The Research Technology Center (RTC) in Cambridge Massachusetts is the East Coast hub of the BBC, and focuses on advancing the fields of RNAi, Regenerative Medicine and Target Generation to deliver new therapies to patients.

"The mission of the Target Generation Unit is to generate a differentiated portfolio of high-confidence, human disease relevant targets. The goal of the Target Generation Unit is to combine Genetics, ?Omics, Traditional and Systems Biology Approaches, including computational modeling to:

? Generate high confidence, human-validated targets
? Predict the most appropriate therapeutic strategy including modality
? And as a result improve clinical survival

This one-of-a-kind unit harnesses the power of bringing Human Genetics early into the research process, and linking with Systems Biology validation approaches to generate a unique approach to target generation. Moreover, the group balances internal resources with external outreach to generate the new targets.

It is early days, but the group has the potential to change our company and our industry."

Responsibilities
As a member of the Target Generation Unit at Pfizer?s BBC you will collaborate with other Pfizer life scientists to help translate there scientific questions into tractable mathematics. You will conceptualize information flow within complex biological systems and implement quantitative models of said systems. The systems modeler will use analytical techniques to expose and leverage biological phenomena to integrate biological information to cellular systems. You will be given the freedom to develop your own conceptual and quantitative models and implement those models using cutting edge software development technology.

As a member of the TGU Systems Biology group you will be part of a multi-disciplinary team of experimentalists, modelers and computational scientists. You will be involved in projects in the areas of predictive toxicology, optimization of biotherapeutics, mechanistic analyses of target modulation strategies, and the selection of highly validated and safety- and efficacy-optimized targets and treatments in a number of biological areas, including diabetes and cancer You will collaborate with scientists from around Pfizer to influence project direction either through direct project management or as a project team member, while continuing to advance science.

Qualifications

Education Required
A PhD degree in an analytical/quantitative field such as bioengineering, chemical engineering, control systems, applied mathematics, statistics or a closely related field is required.

Experience Required
The ideal candidate will have 2+ years of experience working with complex biological systems in a pharmaceutical, biotechnology or academic institution.
Experience applying a variety of mathematical approaches to biological systems including multi-scale modeling, translating from systems-level to cellular processes and vice versa in normal and diseased physiology is highly desirable.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to apply a deep understanding of mathematical theory and physical systems in the context of biology.
Experience with Matlab or similar software development program is desired.

The ideal candidate will be an outstanding communicator who can listen to life scientists and help translate scientific questions into tractable mathematics.

Equal Employment Opportunity
Pfizer is committed to equal opportunity in the terms and conditions of employment for all employees and job applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, gender identity or gender expression, national origin, disability or veteran status. Pfizer also complies with all applicable national, state and local laws governing nondiscrimination in employment as well as employment eligibility verification requirements of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

All applicants must have authorization to work for Pfizer in the U.S. In certain circumstances it may be advantageous to Pfizer to support the application(s) for temporary visa classification and/or sponsor applications for permanent residence so that a foreign national colleague can accept or remain in a work assignment in the U. S. For certain classes of temporary visas, the resulting work authorization may be specific to Pfizer and the specific job and/or work site. Pfizer may at its business discretion decide to or refrain from obtaining, maintaining and/or extending the temporary visa status and/or sponsoring a colleague for permanent residency and /or employment eligibility, considering factors such as availability of qualified U.S. workers and the colleague's long-term prospects for securing lawful permanent residence, among other reasons. Employment applicants requiring immigration sponsorship must disclose, when initial application for employment is made, whether or not they are legally authorized to work for Pfizer in the U.S. and, if so, whether that authorization permits them to work in the job they seek. In no case should Pfizer's support of a colleague?s temporary visa application or sponsorship of a colleague for permanent residence be construed to guarantee success of that application or amend or otherwise invalidate the ?at-will? employment relationship between the colleague and Pfizer.

2 Technical Writers Needed

Job Desc: Developing maintenance and overhaul manuals for heavy transportation equipment. This is a contract job and you will be working full-time from home. Communication with coworkers is accomplished via e-mail and phone.

Knowledge Reqs: A functional understanding of mechanical (including pneumatics), electrical, and control systems down to the individual component level. Must be able to read drawing packages and have the ability to write descriptions and procedures based on those drawings and the available system functional descriptions supplied by the OEM and vendors.

Software Skills: Working knowledge of Framemaker 8, Photoshop, Word, and Excel. Knowledge of Illustrator a plus. You must have your own copy of Framemaker, PS, etc.

This is a demanding job. You will pretty much be on your own so self-sufficiency is mandatory. You'll also need to have a broad base of engineering knowledge. If you are strong in one particular area - like pneumatics or electrical - and weaker in others but can get by, that's OK. This job pays fairly well so if there are any unemployed engineers here with the required software skills, you are more than welcome to apply. Please note that you will be required to submit a rather in-depth test to demonstrate your skills for hiring consideration, so don't bother unless you truly have the skills required.

If anyone is interested, please PM me and we'll get the ball rolling.
