Hello. I live in Lancaster Pennsylvania and I have had the hardest time finding a job out of college. It feels like nobody will give me chance. They all want experience but nobody will let me build up experience. And everyone suspects that if I take a job, I'll leave quickly and use it as a stepping stone. Nobody takes me seriously and it has been 9 months from the time I graduated. I don't understand why such as a pedigree is placed in the IT industry, where it is automatically assumed that you aren't serious unless you were fortunate enough to be given a job by someone else, and thus have experience in the industry. I found this forum off of http://www.big-boards.com and it was the largest English speaking technology board. I found this thread and I am very happy, though skeptical, because it just seems that nobody will hire no matter how many resumes I send out.

I would like to work in Information Technology, eventually in a Database role, but I could start out as a programmer/analyst, tech support, network support or even data entry role. I will post my resume but omit some of the details that reveal personal information. Please note that the greatest strength of my major, "Information Systems - Development" is that it blends programming, networking and database skills with a full education in core business concepts. I have the skills to be a programmer/analyst rather than a computer scientist. That means that I understand accounting, finance, marketing, management, economics and strategy as well as computers.

If you would like to contact me, please get me at austin2359@gmail.com. I have omitted some of the contact information publicly for privacy purposes, but will talk to you personally.

Objective
A programming, networking, or database position in support of organizational computer, business, or operational core competencies.

Education - Bachelor of Science: Information Systems Development, (institution removed for privacy purposes)

Programming Experience
? College Level C# (Visual Studio 2005). Programming was taught from an analyst/business perspective, with the ability to read a business situation and improve it with a software solution.
? Final C# project calculated the amortization of loans, using windows forms, and applied concepts such as object orientation and use of a self-made DLL file. Another project involved creating own Database System using text files and reading and writing to it through C#.
? Web Development course using Apache Server with PHP/MySQL. Every single exercise in the book PHP Programming with MySQL by Don Gosselin was completed as a requirement for passing the course.
? Pre-College, I had experimented intensively with C++, VB 6, Qbasic, and TI-83+ Programs.

Business Experience
? Documented operational procedures and presented to Sr. Management outlining organizational core companies and opportunities for improvement for two local companies (Starbucks and _________ Cabinetry).
? Utilized GLO-BUS software to develop product features, marketing strategies, and cost trade offs to maximize profit margins for a virtual camera business.
? Performed Critical Analysis and prepared Audit Reports of Internal Functions of Deloitte Touche and compared to Financial and Banking Industries.
? Used Project Management tools to outline activities, costs, and detail steps in simulating and managing an actual project for ?St. Andrews Development Co, Inc.? Project made school website as best performance.

Database Experience
? Theoretical Relational Database Training including data modeling, relationships, normalization, triggers, stored procedures, and SQL.
? Created a tutorial on Oracle, in which I installed the free version, created tables, and entered sample data. Created stored procedures, triggers, and views and then organized this into a presentation in front of class.
? Wrote final Term Paper on Oracle and how its recent improvements in ease of use affect business both positively and negatively in terms of productivity and security.
? Frequent use of Access during Scholastic projects.

Networking Experience
? Network-related training in theoretical design (open-source communication model), Windows Server 2003, DNS, DHCP, Active Directory, Remote Desktop, backup, permissions, user groups, and other relevant functions.
? Both hands on and theoretical training were perused in my class work, including installing the Server and applying the functions listed above in labs.
? Completed presentations to classes about both Windows SharePoint Services and Modems.

Work Experience : Temporary Worker (2005 ? 2007)
A steady stream of Factory and Auto Auction assignments through Manpower, Spherion, and Temp Star.

The problem with hiring people right out of college is that they make rookie mistakes. Trust me, you won't truly understand the value of backing EVERYTHING up and TESTING those backups until you need to recover from a production system crash where either your backups didn't work right or they somehow got corrupted. Same thing goes with writing good documentation... you won't realize how valuable it is until you take over a system from another person who wrote lousy troubleshooting procedures.

On the other hand, they get to hire you cheap and you're more willing/gullible to take on the lousy IT projects that nobody else wants

I just want to toss a PSA into this job thread due to an experience we had last week regarding a potential hire.

My company is looking for Controls Engineers (ME, CE, EE, anything E). Had a resume come in that was exceptional. The guy had tons of experience, good job history, some management exp as well. Held a phone interview with him and he performed great and everyone was impressed. So we flew him in for a Friday interview. Paid his hotel for the weekend as well. He brought his wife, called a Realtor and everyone thought the actual interview would just be a formality.
Flight arrives on Friday - he calls and bitches that he has to put his CC down for the rental car. Uhh... hello? you're the driver. The we know he checked into the hotel. Then he never showed up for the interview... Everyone didn't understand why someone would fly in and then not show up. It also sounds like the guy didn't bring his cell phone or something(or we didn't have that number) so we couldn't find him. It ends up that he shows up at our main office which is about 2.5 hours away from the office he was supposed to interview at, work at, look at houses near, and FLEW INTO.
Basically when he showed up he was told that if he can't show up at the correct location for an interview, we weren't interested.

PSA - MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHERE AND WHEN YOUR INTERVIEW IS. Also, ALWAYS GIVE YOUR CELL WITH YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION IN CASE THINGS CHANGE AND THEY NEED TO GET A HOLD OF YOU.

Anyway, we are still looking for Engineers. Atlease Engineers that can show up where and when they are supposed to. I posted way back in this thread about the job qualifications.

Wuh oh. I did that once, except the I went to the right, address, right building in a huge complex, but was off by one floor. The guy who scheduled my interview wasn't 'English as a first language', so I heard sixth when it was suppose to be fifth. At the time, I didn't have a cell phone, and it was my 3rd interview in my whole life, so I only brought a small note with his first name, title and department. The receptionist couldn't find the guy, and they had hotmail blocked at the office, so I couldn't access the e-mail he sent me. It was early in the morning, and after all this, interview didn't go well, I got second-choiced; they offered me the position after the first guy told them to shove it, but I already took back my other summer job by then (paid double). Shortly after, I bought a cell phone and took better notes.

Oh, btw, we are also looking for system engineers. There are a lot of positions open, let me know if you are interested.

Note: US citizenship is required for any position and will need a security clearance, at the SECRET level or above (depending on program/position).

Take a look at this site:

Even if you dont have a clearance, you should still be able to join, you'll just do unclassified work until you get it.
