Recent college graduate (BS in mathematics and physics) looking for an interesting position in the NW Chicago, Illinois suburbs area. Basically there are two job areas I would be interested in.
1.
For lack of a better term, I’m interested in a problem-solving type job. I know that’s a very broad subject area, but I’m most interested in the research/mathematical/technical fields.

For example, I particularly enjoyed a REU internship that dealt with molecular physics simulation in which I had to design some tools to make setting up the initial conditions easy to do.

2.
I am also very interested in getting involved in the education/documentary film field. I don’t have much in the way of formal training in video, but I am an avid photographer (I had a photograph published in National Geographic). As I have very little experience in the field I obviously do not expect much, but if anyone knows of some studios that are doing interesting work and potentially want some extra help, please let me know.

This early in my career I sadly don’t have the 3-5 year of experience in a certain field, with a certain programming background, etc. However, I do have broad knowledge and can work really well in the “here is the problem, here are the tools, go figure it out” type environment.
Currently I work part time remotely testing math questions for an online homework company. It’s an interesting mix of mathematics, programming, and problem finding. However the work is sporadic and I am rather underemployed currently.
If anyone has any leads of specific jobs, or even companies or fields that may not be hiring now but would at some point have something compatible, I would love to hear about it.

1. Desktop support for about 30 users local and about 20 remote users. All XP or Vista(No 7 YET). Office 2007. Acrobat, Backup Exec and Symantec Endpoint. Some adobe software here and there. Your normal office software environment.

2. Network Administrator
Active directory/exchange environment, Server 2k3 and 2008R2. Backup Exec. A web server running WAMP.

The facility is on a fiber loop with other local government agencies, so some networking issues can get complicated, but most of that will be outside the building and you will be calling one of two other admins to deal with it. There is a cisco ASA on a T1 that you will be responsible for. There is also a computer lab for taining you will manage

This is a contract position, no benefits. 1 year contract with option to renew deal.

Don't be afraid if you are shy ina few areas but able and willing to learn. Thats how I got the job when I had it. And it got me another job after 2 years. They will need to move to their own exchange/spamfirewall/mail archiving system and want to do more webhosting in the near future. You will work hard and get paid to learn. and read, ALOT.
