networking tutorials to recommend??

i've bought a switch to share a cable connection with my brohter recently
and i've really met up with lots of problems and i really need some help
any tutorials to recommend pls

Read here first

You really need to give more details then that in order for us to help. What OS are you using? What other hardware do you have (NICS,ROUTERS)? How many IP addresses do you have? (usually just 1)

How were you planning to set this up using the switch? Were you going to buy extra IP addresses and just plug the modem in your uplink port of the switch?

Are you going to put 2 NICs in one machine and connect the modem to one and use ICS or some other NAT/Proxy software?

Are you going to connect a one port router and have the modem connected to it then connect rhe 1 port to a regular port on your switch?

Are you planning to build a Freesco router and connect it to you modem and then to a regular port on a switch?

You see just buying a switch does not mean you are ready to share your cable modem. A switch does nothing other then connect your computers together.

i bought a UNEX broadband gateway with a 4port 10/100mbps ethernet switch built-in
2 UNEX Nics
1 ip address
i'm sharing a cable modem between 2 PCs
my O/S is windows 98
as for the rest ummm.. io dun understand it
the problem is that it worked intitially for one week but after one week it stopped working!!
help pls

Well you see now we are learning a bit more about your setup. Your first post says you have a switch when you actually have a Gateway/Router with a built in switch. See now this clears up alot of the confusion. Now we need to find out what settings you need for the router? Do you get a static or Dynamic IP?

Also can you explain a bit more about "the problem is that it worked intitially for one week but after one week it stopped working!!"

What is not working? the router itself doesnt work or your clients cant get online?
Can you ping the router?
Can the router ping your ISP gateway?

You should check these things out first. If your router can't ping the ISP or any internet address for that matter then we can assume your router settings are wrong. Now if you can ping the ISP from the router then we can assume that your clients are set up wrong?

This is just a broad guess. Tell us a bit more about the setup. I have not used this router before and do not know the features but most are pretty much the same.

Double check your settings in the router. Also if your ISP uses dynamic IPS and you set up the router for static, they could have assigned a new IP to you and your settings in the router would no longer work.

Well ok I have used a netgear router and you can telnet into it then inone of the menus you can ping any address you want. I would use this to make sure the router was seeing the internet and then if it could ping each client.

Ok give me your settings you are suppose to use for your cable modem. Sub your ip address with xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and I will know what you mean.

I will see if I have time to look up your Router and learn how to set it up. I will check in with you later on Thursday, should be pretty simple to get it running. I assume your internet is working ok with just one computer connected to the modem?

ummm.... could u tell me how to get my ip address , as for the cable modem settings i'll check it up cos the cable staff came over to install the cable modem for me

Get your ip address by going to Start > Run > then type winipcfg and hit enter.

Check the tcp/ip settings on your computer and see what setting you are using there.

as for the tcp/ip settings
i left everthing as default except the bindings
which i checked the boxs for print & file sharing
and client for microsoft networks

*WINS configuration-use DHCP for WINS resolution
*ip address-obtain ip address automatically
*Gateway-i left it empty though i can enter things in it
*DNS-disabled DNS
*NetBIOs-enable NetBIOs over TCP/IP
*Advance-allow binding to ATM value-no
*bindings-for print & file sharing,client for microsoft networks
