Networking Two XP Machines

I've recently moved my two computers into seperate rooms on opposite sides of the house. Before it was convenient to have them networked via a parallel cable for printer sharing. Now I have bought a hub and i am now working on getting the network up.
The problem is that I cannot browse shared files on old machine on my new machine, and I cannot even see the new computer from the old machine. (yes i do have file sharing on for both machines.. and the ip's are set manually with the same subnet mask. )
However I CAN connect to an FTP server if i set on up.
Any Suggestions?

Try enabling NetBUI and see if that helps.

Yeah, No that didnt work.
It actually made it worse.. now i cant even see the old computer from the new one..
but they can both see and browse themselves on the network

Can they ping each other? Can you find them when you use the Search for computer function?

I'm not trying to steal your help or anything, but I am having the exact same problem, and Yes I have tried pinging the other computer and it doesn't work, I have tried the net view command also. I have also tried the network wizard that transfers the settings via a floppy.

Well, if your using IP exclusively, and not pinging, then the net command is pretty much useless unless a firewall is just blocking ICMP traffic. If you have no firewall enabled and you cant ping, start troubleshooting layer 1. Physical. cables, hub/switch, etc...

okay, I can ping now, I turned off the firewall, but still can't see the other on network neighborhood

Forget about network neighborhood. Use the Find or search for computer function. Search for computer name. If that doesnt work, use the IP of the remote machine. Make sure you have connectivity first using the NetBIOS name (Computer name)

ok, when I searched using the IP I found it, thanks. Why can't I see it in network neighborhood though?

Because NN sux. Just my opinion. Occasionally just hitting refresh will clear things up. If your running Win9X/ME turn off the master browser function on all but one PC. Done in the "File and Printer SHaring" properties from the network properties applet. Usually NetBEUI will solve resolution issues. My remedy of choice is a hosts file.

Go to your tcp/ip properties->advanced->wins and enable netbios over tcp/ip
