Networking vs GPA

Let take this into perspective.

Person A:
Lets say John has a very crappy GPA right out of a two year community college and then transferred to a state university and then worked his ass off and got at least a 3.0. He is majoring in business with a focus in accounting.

However despite his low GPA he has networked with a lot with businesses, accountants and companies.

Person B: Lets say Bob has a very high GPA. 3.7+ and majored in accounting but had not even began to network.

Both have no experience or any internship in their field.

In your opinion who would have a easier time finding an accounting gig in a timespan of 1-3 months?

that's easy, "A" wins it all the way, that's assuming all the factors are same. But the GPA should not be too bad though...

Social networking is the key to getting a job. It is practically essential.
2nd consideration (if nobody knows you) is the name of your school. Ivy league institutions always look better than community colleges.

GPA is third assuming there is no personal knowledge of the applicant and their school is no more impressive than the other applicants. And the way they conduct themselves during the one-on-one interview will override most other things.

Person A

my undergrad GPA wasn't stellar, but my people skills, charm, and personality got me several high paying jobs.

Yeah, I graduated with a guy who got a 2.4 GPA. He ended up doing pretty well for himself because of networking.

Also, my fiancee got a job offer at Deloitte and she had a GPA below 3.0 because of networking.

networking all the way.

The only exception to this rule is if the person who has networked doesn't actually know what they're hired to know and the people they have networked with know that. This doesn't apply to your scenario, but is worth noting.

How exactly do you define "people skills" in this context? Somebody that can charm the shit out of anyone and make his/her interviewer laugh? Does that really weigh greater than practical knowledge and skills when it comes to interviews for upper-tier jobs?

Yes soft skills ate more important than what you know as well. Comes a close second to who you know.

I would guess that charming the shit out of people is a required skill for "upper tier" jobs.

GPA is king...

if you want to do a Ph.D. and make six figures for working 30 hours a week...

How exactly would you charm the shit out of someone? With one of those wind instruments snake charmers use to charm snakes? Sounds messy to me.

You will never know unless you find out. Sometimes they look for other qualities as well other than qualifications. And no im not talking bout woman and such before someone post that.

Networking all the way. Always. Without networking, you're becoming one of the expendable "cannon fodder" type of guys that has to prove himself.

You make progress in life by networking and networking alone. If you are networked, opportunities will present themselves, whether you are able to take advantage of them or not. It's not what you do or how, it's who you know. I can't say I'm a people guy (I don't even have a Facebook account) so you can imagine I learned this the hard way.
