networking with no router

ok well this is my situation

i got 3 comps. 1 downstairs conected to router (wired) and a laptop upstairs connected to router wireless) and another pc upstairs with an ethernet card...but no wireless card. (has a 56k modem too)

im trying to get some files form upstairs pc to downstairs pc...i know i can bring box downstairs and connect to router but this might go on for lets say a month..so i dont really wanna do that all the time

now eventually i will buy a wireless card for the upstairs pc..but until then im wondering if i can connect that pc to my laptop thru the ethernet port. i did it but i dont know how to connect them together cause it just says cable unplugged. i tried using vpn..(lol?) cause laptop has integrated modem...i conected to pc's modem and tried going on but it didnt work (maybe im doing it wrong?)

anyways i need to know:

1) is vpn possible at will it only go at 56k?
2) is there a way to connect w/ ethernet cable and share the wireless

If I understand properly you would like to use your laptop to get wireless access from your router and then use the laptop wired port to share the connection with the desktop?

I would need to setup ICS with the wireless card as the in and the wired as the out. This will make your laptop a DHCP server, etc. and let your desktop get an IP and access from the desktop. However, you won't be able to get files easily from the basement because of the firewall and because the upstairs pc won't see the downstairs pc (different levels of the network).

It might be easiest to do something like use a usb drive (thumb/flash) or get a usb cross over file sharing cable. Then transfer the files to the laptop and then the desktop.
