Networking with WinXP Pro...

-I don't want to use "Simple File Sharing", so it is disabled
-I'm using a direct crossover cable.
-Both machines have an "Administrator" account with the same password.
-The host is logged-on as "Anonymous" (also an admin).
-The client is logged-on as Administrator.
-The root of the HD is shared on the host.
-Permissions are set:
"Administrator" = Full Control-Allow
"Everyone" = Full Control-Deny

I STILL can't access the share. I can see it, but WinXP still says:

"\\@#$@\root\ is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. ...
Access is denied."

What's wrong?

Nevermind, I removed the "Everyone" group (which was added by default) and it worked.

Everyone includes Administrator/s and a deny beats an allow - so when you deny the Everyone group you are denying Administrator as well.
Remove the Everyone group from the share permissions and you will achieve what you are trying to do.

^ As you can see, I did. However, I don't know why the "Everyone" group is added by default, especially after all the heuristics from Windows when sharing the root of a drive.

Where in Windows can you allow or deny the accounts like you guys are talking about? (Set permissions)

ALSO: Do both computers have to have an administrator account with the same password?

The same account must be added to both computers unless you are operating on a domain network, which is unlikely.

The permissions are only configurable if you have disabled "Simple File Sharing" under Folder Options. There is no way to disable Simple File Sharing if you are using Windows XP Home Edition.

If I am using simple file sharing, why would I need to have user accounts on each system for shares? I have never had to do that. I have one user account on each system, and it isn't duplicated anywhere.

Anyone on the Internet can delete files from your shared folder because you can't set permissions...nyah!

Seriously, virii copy themselves into your shared folder and hope that some curious person executes the file (usually a .vbs file, but you probably have extensions hidden...so you wouldn't know.)
