its fine as long as you rev your engine really high right before you drop it back in gear

reminds me of the family guy episode where Meg learns do drive and peter tells her that if she makes eye contact at a red light she has to rev the engine and race them. then on her driving test she races a cop. its funny

Glad I was right.

I'm not sure if he said this, but the handbrake does not use the hydraulic system at all (as far as I know, maybe it's different in the real new cars). It's a mechanical bypass to use if you lose the hydraulic system, and that's why it only controls the rear brakes. So if the handbrake did run through the hydraulic system then it would be the same as the footbrake, and it wouldn't matter which you used. But since it doesn't, the footbrake is better.

cars were designed for this in mind already... if you were meant to put it in neutral while braking at a red, then they would've done that for you too... auto-transmission, remember ?

It really doesn't make a tangible difference if you leave it in D. !!!!!$(*&!(*$&@(!!! Personally I feel that if you like to mess with your tranny like that every stoplight, you'd do more harm than good.

An automatic transmission doesn't like it when you move the stick. There it is. Move the shift lever as little as you can. So you should not be switching to neutral at stops. You should also not be switching to park or turning off the car while waiting for a train.

Because there is a good reason for it.

So you cant get the car in gear when that 18 wheeler with the bad brakes or sleeping driver is bearing down on you in the read mirror? Never fear. Your TO bearing won't wear anymore. Ever.

hahahahaha Good point. I'd typically drop my ol' truck into Neutral when I was sitting in a big group of cars at a long light. The clutch on that old F-150 was BRUTAL. My left leg was actually bigger than my right leg from holding that monster down. A couple times when I was crawling down the thru-way stop-and-go style for about 15 or 20 miles 'cause some jackass got into an accident talking on his cell phone, I swore my frickin' leg was going to fall off. She was quite a beast.
