Hello , Until now I've always been an AMD System builder. I'm switching to an Intel setup because of the pitiful range of feature rich AMD motherboards, compared to the intel socket boards .

Does anyone have any advice about the different sockets and CPU Range, With regards to new or older sockets and upgradability .

I know almost nothing about intel and dont want to build a system with parts that are likely to be phased out for a newer platform etc .

BTW ... My budget is about:-

£150 - £175 - Motherboard
£150 - CPU

You can save abit on the board and get Z87/Z97+i5 4670K. So much faster than AMD and much more power efficient.

Intel CPU sockets generally change every two years so whatever is for sale today will most likely not support newer Intel CPUs in 2-3 years, so there really isn't any long term upgrade paths no matter what Intel socket you buy today. And unlike AMD, Intel rarely (if ever) lowers CPU prices, so don't expect to upgrade in the future to the fastest CPU for your socket on the cheap, but that also means you could probably sell your used Intel CPU for a better price since they basically hold their value much better then AMD's CPUs do.

If it were me I'd spend less on the board and put more money into the CPU (unless you really needed a board with special features) , and get the fastest CPU I can afford now. I'd shoot towards an i5-4570 as it would serve you very well for just about anything you could do and for many-many years.

Get an ASUS Z97-A and a 4670K. Or wait a month and get a 4690K (Devil's Canyon). That motherboard allows you to drop in Broadwell when it hits at the end of the year as well. That'll likely be the end of the 1150 socket though.

I really don't think Intel holds their value. I have an i7 3820 that I bought on ebay for $170. That CPU currently goes for $310 on Newegg. I listed that CPU on eBay last night and I have 6 watchers and no bids. I started it out at $20 and you can buy it now for $195. I was going to use the i7 3820, but decided to go Haswell.

I have a 3 GHz Pentium 4. Can I still make my $40 bucks back after what I payed for it back in 2009? LOL

You don't have to wait a month. You can pre order a 4790k and they come out on the 25th! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...9-_-06032014_3

Thanks for the info, I was leaning towards the MSI MPower Intel Z97 - Socket 1150 Board already. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-259-MS&groupid=701&catid=5

It seems to have everything i need, and the black & yellow looks great for a custom build . My 3 previous boards were ASUS, i want to try something different this time. Along with a 4670K/4690K CPU . Or if i can save a little more money the 4790K.

BTW ... I should still be able to use my RAM & PSU from my current setup below ... Yes ?

Corsair Vengeance 4 x 4GB DDR3-1600
Corsair RM Series RM 650
ASUS Sabretooth 990FX R2.0
AMD FX-8320 - Black
