Apart from Intels Workstation tuned 750 drives and the none existent SM951 NVMe variant (in retail anyway)

The other contenders are dragging their heels. (or having trouble writing the firmware)

Samsung SM951 NVMe M2 OEM drive, rumoured to be making it to retail, but we are still waiting.
HP Z turbo Drive G2 (rebranded SM951 on a PCIe add in card) When i queried HP if they had added power loss protection due to the extra real estate available on the daughter card their answer was no, so expect this to be an overpriced SM951 for HP workstations.
Intel 750 Series (tuned for high queue depths, SM951 is better at client workloads and uses less power to do it)
Marvell 88SS1093 (PCIe 3.0 x4) controller, 2,900Mbps read (CES)
Phison PS5007-e7 (PCIe 3.0 x4) controller demoed at Computex The controller provides sequential read/write up to 2,500/1,200 MBps and 300,000/250,000 random read/write IOPS (Gskill Phoenix Blade X)

Marvell and Phison appear to have some solid contenders to compete with Samsung and Intel, Hopefully the wait will not be too much longer.

Yep, hoping they aren't released too long after skylake, hoping to get it all upgraded at once.

Last I checked they said they would start shipping the SM951 NVMe oem to retailers in mid July but I've been waiting since so I can put it in an Intel NUC!

I asked Ramcity when they were expecting supply of the SM951 NVMe as they had also said mid July on a post here, apparently they are still in test with samsung and no new date has been issued.

Rumor:
Microsoft has placed a mega order for the NVMe version of Samsung's SM951 for their surface pro 4

Am so giddy right now, although not quite giddy enough to notice the significant price increase over the ahci version. I wonder if that will even out when they are actually available.

Hopefully they are just spanking the early adopters and the price will go down after a few weeks. I can't decide whether to upgrade my i5 2500k at 4.3ghz/128gb crucial SSD, to a skylake system with the SM951 NVMe 512GB. It's going to be like £900 upgrade and I don't really need it, but I really want it!!! Logical brain vs enthusiast brain.

Exactly the same here except for lynnfield, my i7 should be arriving in about an hour or so, even though the motherboard i want isn't available yet.

Well your CPU is a bit older, so it's pretty justifiable from your point of view, I think you have got a lot out of that system (I'm assuming it's the one in your sig). Please let me know if it was worth it when you have finished building it. Which Mobo and SSD are you going with?

Yeah the lynnfield has been great over the years, still plays todays games smoothly. Plus i didn't get the problems most people had with Watchdogs or Arkham Knight.

Going for the Asus z170 Deluxe, the built in wifi and bluetooth swung it for me as I'd likely pay the extra for pcie versions of these anyway, might as well have everything else.

Going for the 256GB Samsung nvme drive when it's available, will test things out on my current 830 until then.

Am looking at the Gskill 3200 ram quad channel for X99, there shouldn't be much difference between this and the yet to be released 2x8GB skylake generation Gskill ram should there?

I have no idea about the RAM, but surely someone on this forum will know. I think I'm going to wait at least a month or two before I do it...if I do it. Let other people like you be the guinea pigs ;p

I thought about that but I've been waiting to upgrade ever since devils canyon so I pulled the trigger. I think my hardware choice is a pretty safe bet.

Yeah I think you have done it right too. You should get another 5 years out of what you have just bought...maybe more. Good luck with it.

If the UK has it on the 18th August, surely the USA will have it before then? I don't know how these launches work, but I would of thought the USA is the biggest market?
