Never going to ZZF or Mwave again

Maybe it is just a principle, maybe I am on to something.

Well I have purchased through ZZF many times in the past. Suddenly they need my home phone number to make the transaction. Why? They have shipped to the same address and same credit card was used. Why do they need the phone number? I called American Express and got an authorization number from them. Nope, not good enough, they need to verify phone number.

Fast forward to today. Same thing with mwave. Won't process the order without a phone number. I ask why, and of course it is "for my protection." They cancelled my order, then I asked them to cancel my account. No more emails, no more coupons (emails), nothing.

I do trust American Express with my personal information. I have done so since 1992. Never had any problems with them divulging my phone number.

I do not trust ZZF and MWave with my home number. The phone rings and I pick it up. Lately I wonder why I have a phone? OOh yea, DSL only broadband in my area.

I really really believe they sell the numbers. It is a good revenue source.

I don't think they need my home number. What do you think?

I think you're overly paranoid. If you're on the Do Not Call list then they can sell your number all day long but telemarketers can't call it.

One good reason for requiring your number is so that if there is a problem with your order they can call you. I've had retailers do that when I ship to an address that is not my home address.

You're paranoid about your phone number but not your address? They could sell your address too.

I dont know if mwave has my number or not, but if they want it, more power to them.

Since when is phone number "personal information". Also why do you care if you just have the phone for your dsl connect, just throw your phone away and give out the line number all day long.

Also, Vic, I love how you are so concerned about your personal information when you let the entire internet know who you are on your profile.

Good Points! I think you're overly paranoid, I give out my phone number to merchants I deal with since I have had them call me about my order.

some answers. if I give them the number, they call, that is what they did. If I don't answer the phone, order gets cancelled just the same.

I don't trust them with my credit card number, however I trust American Express. Never had a single problem domestic or overseas with that card. Lately I believe they are out sourcing, and that does bug me.

I hardly consider AT forums as the "whole" internet, besides we are friends on the forum.

They can sell my address, because it is much easier to ignore actual mail.

For the record I am not paranoid of someone stalking me. I hate telemarketing phone calls of any kind. Especially on my cell phone, but I took care of that.

was this with a large purchase, like several hundred dollars worth?

thast generally when they do stuff like this. usually when you sign up they ask that as part of the form though.

generally i dont mind for an online retailer to have my phone number, as certain things may arise with shipping.

but if its at a B&M store and ask me for my phone number and address, i tell them to buzz off since im getting the goods right there.

ZZF actually called me and comfirmed a large order I had made with them. I was pleasantly suprised. I see no reason to not give them your number.

I've dealt with both businesses before and never felt like they were selling off customer lists or info.

**********************************************
Years ago they told me to relax, nobody has the time or resources to be spying on me. Nowadays, they have the time and resources- but I'm not important enough for them to be spying on me.

yep, just recently I ordered from ZZF and they called me about my shipping and billing addresses not being the same (ship to dorm, 'bill' my debit card to home).. although after that i changed the billing address on my bank accounts anyhow.

dude, come down to the house and we'll have a drink.

like I said, I am not paranoid about stalkers. I just don't like being bothered.

I'm listed in the phone book, and my house is listed with the county. If you can get my social security, then I am concerned. Not concerned that you have it, but by the ease of availability.

I am a doctor, and ANYONE can look that up. There are huge databases with that information. Not too happy with that one, but the public needs to know. Its the law.

On the flip side, I did speak with Mwave. They do have a privacy clause, and seems reasonable. I'll renew my order.

However, I am sticking with my assertion on ZZF. I mean I even got them an authorization number. And all they wanted was my phone number, even after I answered the why question.

And no $580k does not go that far 'round here.

Hell, I have done several transactions on the forums. Look up my heat. I would be very happy to talk to one of you on the phone regarding a transaction.

Well, looks like you might have to cross Newegg off your list now too, as my friend ordered from them a few days ago and it requires that phone number and also for it to match the one on your credit card.

Haven't had the issue with newegg (yet) but if they are reasonable (like having a privacy policy, accepting CC authorization) then I don't see a problem.

About to place the order with Mwave (see above post).
