Yeah, it's BB's fault alright. They should've been checking for fingerprints, monitoring surveillance camera, and putting their customers though polygraph tests(not to mention a quick price scan). We should never ever trust people to not lie! That's just weird! There are buncha reasons to not care that someone got a sweet sweet deal on a 16x burner, but that's not one of them.

"I see a guy open a new TDK 16x10x40(at 249.99!) and take the blank cdr,s and cd,s close the box and put it back and walk out of the store"

???? Why open hardware to boost 2 elcheapo CDR's? the frigging CDR shelf has 20 different packs of CDRs to grab from

Regardless of the ethical considerations here, this was clearly theft by KennyG, and what he has posted is a confession. He is also foolish enough to have in his profile the fact that he lives in Pembroke Pines, FL, which would make it pretty easy for an ambitious AT crusader to identify one or more BB stores who were the likely victims here, and given that he not only stole, but came here to brag to thousands of people about it, they might well press charges even given the small dollar amount. DUMB!

I for one used to work at Best Buy a little less than a year ago and I know for a fact that (in the computer department especially) the margin is very low, so they lost money on that drive you bought. Secondly, Best Buy employees receive bonus pay for deterring theft or shrink (which is the term we use for and money lost in the store) after every inventory. I must admit it was foolish for the employee not to check (as for myself, when I worked there I NEVER trusted what teh customer said, I caught too many trying to shirk me out of my inventory money), but you just took money out of someones pocket, and not just Best Buy's.

Wow. You guys really dont know how the world really is. First of all, stop complaining that this was theft. How is this different from the fact that everyone of you has used napster? I'm sure there was no guilt there. OR the fact that 90% of your software is illegit.

Second, Could you really care less for a corporation of that size? Its their responsibility to keep things on track. Kennyg didnt go there with the intention of stealing at all. He was hoping to save a few bucks and he got lucky. The only ones who you should care for are the employees but i hardly think kenny himself made a difference.

I'm sure BB Ceo is really hurt from that fraction of a penny kennyg took from him.
Those of you who are crying "theft!" are only doing so because you dont have the luxury of thinking twice.

Sarcastic next time your house is robbed i hope the thief posts about his "Hot Deal". Then we can all stick up for him too.

I can't blame the original poster for trying/getting a good deal, 1/2 off the "real" price(+ rebate) still would have been sweet. BUT! Fact is he knowingly lied to get it. Besides the fact he didn't have the GUTS to turn in the original thief...

We all lay the bricks for our own prisons....

man...what a stupid thread..I don´t even know why I read it...
KennyG, you suck. Paying less because you fooled the manager isn't a good deal, it is the same thing as stealing blank cdrs. Shame on you.

<< Dang it's people like you that drive the prices up for the rest of us, that are truthful. Doing what you did is wrong, you should have turned in the guy that opened it, and then they prolly would have given you a decent deal anyway. >>

Yea right 2001 America... You would be stalked and killed.
They pay out of the world prices for insurance for this type of thing'
Let them collect a little back for loss...piss on it !

KennyG:

I don't know how you figure $175 is half of $250?

Yes.. You got a good deal and I'd be happy about it, but you're right.. You should've kept it to yourself because it does lack integrity.

Are you condoning theft with the argument 'everyone else is doing it'? I can't believe what I'm hearing.

<< Second, Could you really care less for a corporation of that size? >>

Again, I'm in shock at the logic (or lack thereof) here. So stealing is OK if it's done against someone who doesn't really feel the impact?

I can't believe there are people who can justify what KennyG did. I think by rationalizing it, it justifies our own theft.

When I worked at Walgreens, management told us that every dollar lost to theft required $400 in legit sales to make up for it. Can't vouch for the truth of that but it came from a regional VP.

I still think this is wrong, but now I think he is lying anyway, why would someone have opened the box to take out a couple of CDR's. KennyG, got a scan of the reciept? I would like to see this for myself.

Sixpack, you're quite right. I was in professional sales for years and markup IS very low. It takes a lot of sales to generate any profit after store expenses such as utilities and wages. When something is stolen that is worth $100, and the store makes $5 profit on said item, it takes 20 sales of that $5 profit to make up for the $100 item stolen.
Or ripped off.

Having previously worked for a large retail company I can say that even if KennyG reported the CDR thief to the store they wouldn't have done anything. In order for the security staff to make an arrest they have to witness the theft. (In many cases even an employee reporting the theft will still not result in any action being taken to arrest the person) Unfortunately companies won't risk the potential lawsuit if they don't find any property on the person.

However, KennyG should have reported the theft to the store simply to be a nice guy. The store likely wouldn't have done anything special for him, but it can prevent an unsuspecting customer from buying that drive.

Getting a good deal on a product is one thing, but lyeing and cheating to get it is quite another.

It is downright shameful and decadent to do something like that and then brag about it. Then there a some that try to justify it by saying "everybody is doing it" or "it is a huge corporation".
If you did that just keep it to yourself do not portay it as a "hot Deal", do not promote other to do the same.

You guys rember the stories your grandparents used to tell you. How people never locked their doors so if they needed a cup of sugar they'd go next door and help themselves. I only know of 1 store which when closed is left unlocked. People come in, help themselves and write down their name, what they took, and either leave the money or come in some time later to pay. I bet that is 1 more store than anyone else here knows.

Keep it up folks, I bet we can force that store to lock their doors over the weekend as well.

there is a difference between being motivated to steel something and getting a lucky break. None of you have answered my question on whether you think using illegal software or listening to copied music is less wrong than what kennyg did.

By the way there is no such thing as altruism. You dont steel or you may be generous only because it reflects well on YOU and makes YOU happy. You arent doing it because you care so much for Best Buy. At least thats why i dont steal. I couldnt care less for Best Buy.

And if someone here can explain to me what is wrong with doing something if there are no consequences, i will be very very impressed.

Wow that's sumthin all right. Not a very clean deal though, since you had to observe a theft and profit from it, plus lied about the purchase price to get your "hot deal".
