That works today, but the hipster trend is going to die off soon, and then it will be required to explain in great detail how you do things and how much effort it took, and the mythical savants and geniuses-unaware will be revealed for the fakes they are.

I spent 8 minutes writing this post, completely starting over twice, and editing a few specific word choices until satisfactory.

Tried that with the ladies. They didn't seem impressed with my ability to complete copulation in under a minute. I'm a Baby making machine! Why don't they appreciate my near German efficiency?

Well this is unlike your usual word salad numbskull jibber jabber. Did you have some help making this OP or have they changed your meds?

In any event this thread is all but useless without examples therefore I'll just turn it into a joke thread.

So...if my clothes came out of the closet this morning does that make them gay?

Hmmmm .... well usually I grunt a bit to show those around me I'm putting in maximum effort. Grunts show you're trying hard.
Maybe I'm doing it wrong?

If the stuff you do is advanced enough even when you explain how you got to where you got, people will still be just as confused. But if you want to play it safe you just patent whatever it is you did, so others can't do it even if they figure it out.

Good advice! Now, as a fellow employee who's work is dependent on you repeating your task as quickly as possible, I am going to let management know how much you claim your accomplishments are effortless and efficient, and put you under immense pressure to produces far beyond your actual capacity.

When people are in awe over something I have done and ask me how I did it I say to them "You know how they say 'It isn't rocket science'? Well it's rocket science", then exit stage left.

If I were to apply that to my welding abilities then the idea of "effortlessly" seems like I didn't do a good job.

In welding my instructor always said your weld is your signature. And boy was it! I made a 6010 look like a freakin MIG weld.

Never share the means to your end. Let your finshed product speak for itself

I learned this back when I was heavy into art, which kind of translates out to two things:

#1 - People feel a need to voice their opinion (especially criticism) when you're on a WIP. They want to give you their input or tell you why it needs changing. I quit showing off WIP artwork to people because of that...finished product only after that! Now I understand why people freak out & say "don't look at it, it's not finished yet!" Not because they're unhappy with the progress, but because people act like...people

#2 - I discovered that an awful lot of people have no imagination & all they can see is what's in front of them. I don't mean that as a negative put-down, but rather in terms of simply not being able to visualize things that don't exist yet. I had always just assumed that everybody could do that, but I learned that there are plenty of people who't can mentally fill in the blank from a half-finished painting to the finished product.

That even applies to IT work...when people watch over your shoulder & say gee, that's all you had to do? Yes, running Malwarebytes isn't rocket science, but knowing where to get it, how to configure the settings, setting up a rootkit scan, scanning with HerdProtect, cleaning out special issues with AdwCleaner, reading logs from Hitman, checking msconfig for bootup entries, looking in the Start menu for shortcuts, checking the Windows timer function for hidden kick-offs, etc. Is it hard? No, but go away while I'm working & let me do my job in peace so you can get back to using your computer, man

Also one other rule I have for myself: Never bring something new to the public.

For example, if you have a potlock at work, don't try out a new recipe...use one that you know will work so don't get in a pinch or embarrass yourself (spoken from experience, unfortunately ).

Life is expectations management.

Sometimes what OP says is the correct thing to do, because it can lead to people thinking they can expect more out of you which increases your value. Especially if it's a task that is a one-off, making it seem like it was easy increases your opportunity to face other such challenges.

But sometimes the OP is completely wrong. If what you are doing is a routine task then making it seem effortless is counter-productive because A. You won't get as much credit for doing that task in the future and B. You won't get as much leeway the next time you do it. For routine tasks it is best to hype up their difficulty and pad the books so to speak, so that way you get the maximum credit when you exceed these low expectations but you don't reset the bar for the next go round.

The hard truth about life is work people don't see you do you don't get credit for. There isn't some fairy godmother in life that makes it so all your hard work pays off, the whole "do hard work and you will be rewarded" bit exists to keep the masses in line. The real truth is "do hard work and your boss/leader see that and THEN you will be rewarded." Sometimes people who hide their process to look more amazing are actually not getting maximum value out of their efforts.
