His upper body gives the illusion of size.... No doubt he's in shape, lean and has muscle, but he isn't that 'big'.... All smoke and mirrors with the help of Hollywood magic. His legs look in proportion to me.

I just got done training legs
5 sets trap bar. Worked up to 405 x 10.
Supersetted rack pulls with traditional hack squats. 200-225 range for 4 sets of each
Upper landing on the sled for 5 sets of 15. Think I did 16 plates
Single leg extensions followed by single leg curls for sets of 12. Think I did 5 on each.

Worked hard, didn't move a lot of weight, but for a guy like me with chicken legs, you have to start somewhere

Well, what I'm trying to say is that Jackman probably is not skipping leg day as the previous post was sort of implying that (imo). I'm pretty thin (with long limbs) myself then as I got older, I got skinny fat and now I'm sorta lean and mean.

Simply, not everyone will have large quads and bulging hamstrings and god knows you'll have tons of people with no calves, like myself. Team No Calves!

I've seen a lot of heavy deadlifts with small legs. It's an ass/back movement more than anything.

I have never seen a heavy squat with small legs.

really? seen a lot of powerlifter moves some decent weight with nothing more than average looking legs. most I would call small relative to the rest of their body.

personally, when I was squating "big" my legs were 2-3" smaller than they are now.

regardless, a big squat is in the hips and doesn't take a set of measurably large legs to get up some decent weight

Sure there are people that are crazy exceptions:

Alexander Kang:

Richard Hawthorne:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RognNFLn_nk

Then you take a look at Jonnie Candito: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LaZPkhIsbig or the other folks in his class -- the top guys have some huuuuuge legs.

BUT, everyone gains muscle. This video has a really good explanation on how this works:

My legs, at their meatiest part, are nearly 4 inches larger than when I measured them a little over a year ago. Started out at 20.25" and now I'm at 24" and I'm lighter than I was back then at 174 this morning vs 180-something. My favorite jeans, Levi 514s (straight fit), are getting pretty tight in the thigh, lol.

Candito is an animal, glad he is now competing in IPF. I don't think his legs look very small either, they are relatively big to the rest of his body. Hawthorne, yes has some skinny legs. He is probably the exception to the rule.

I don't understand why people skip leg days. Those are the best days. I suppose it helps that squats are my second favorite lift, deadlift being my first. But, that is mostly because of the feeling I get after doing it. So much of a rush to have just spent a ton of energy lifting something heavy; feeling as if every muscle has just been expelled of all it's stamina. Hard to get that feeling from other lifts.

The excuse I've heard from 3 separate people that don't know each other is that it is too tiring. Two said their legs are sore for the entire week (too low frequency, too much volume) and the other just didn't like to be tired for the rest of the week... They ask me how do I do legs on Monday and how can I manage legs 3x a week..?

I do SL Madcow 5x5, so my legs get it 3 times a week. I've been trying to see how many reps I can do for 225lbs after the heaviest set (today was 275x5) and today I got to 15. Rest of the workout was crap, but hey I love squats more than anything else anyway. I'm also trying to get to 2x bodyweight, but I made it more difficult by gaining weight (174x2 = more than I've tried ever).

How bout skin tight 569's? ...

People skip leg day cause they're lazy, don't know how to properly squat, didn't get any bigger/stronger the times they did train legs.... Because they're lazy and don't know how to lift. They can always wear pants..... And curls for the girls are way more fun

And those excuses are completely fucking stupid. If you did legs for the first time in years, sure, you'd be sore for a week. The next week, you'd be much less sore. And after that, you'd hardly notice it. "Too tired"? Why bother going to the gym if lifting makes you tired? Sounds like a bunch of excuses from people who don't actually lift.

569s? If that's tighter than what I'm wearing, nahhhh, hahaha.

The laziness is selective. These are people that would do about 10 different variations of bench press and bicep curls -- typical gym bros. Not that I mind since it means the rack is open for me to use.

Speaking of bench press variations, I saw a gym bro that has a fanastic physique (drugs) doing neck presses (aka guillotine press -- look it up and laugh). He was showing it to a younger guy that can't really do any of the big three lifts properly and I had to call him out on it. He says it's good for stretching and warming up and building a big chest. I suggested some warmup with just the bar and cable work and the elliptical machine and stretching and incline bench for the upper chest and he brushed me off. X_X This guy does nothing but tiny weight on the big three and a ton of isolation work and supposedly competes. Totally ridiculous.

Many guys (and girls) simply have very ectomorphic leg genetics even if they have good upper body development.

Even Arnold went to calf implants.

I have been known to skip leg day, occasionally. But I like running!

Running isn't really a substitute for training legs if you want strength and size. Calves should grow but again that isn't the most affective way to get calves for most people. Weights aren't going to the same running stamina though if you want to run 10k.

Speculation with no evidence. He was a monster everywhere else, no reason he couldn't train calves with the same effort.

This is true. I have large quads, avg calves and small ankles. Upper body is the same, below avg forearms and small wrists. This works well because it keeps me in the 181/198 weight classes yet I can still move considerable weight. However, I think to get to the elite of the elite (think Shane Hamman), you're going to need to have large bones everywhere.

Except in the beginning he wasn't a monster in his calves and would pose with his legs in water even. Then one summer on an overseas sabbatical he came back with decent calves.

I agree it's never been proven.

However; he did finally admit to using/abusing steroids in the day...which many people still believe he has never admitted.

I want you to watch Arnold in the Mr. Olympia competitions. His calves have striations and flex. There is no way those are implants, especially done at that time.

AND, Arnold admitted to doing steroids a long time ago. He was candid about when it was legal, he took them.

Implants below the muscle would show these things.
