So my brother let me build a PC with a 2500k processor but was to stuburn to pay 25 more bucks on a decent cooler.

I thought, what the hell, he's not gonna OC it so all should be ok. At first it was, since I build it in the winter, but now when temperatures are boiling he started to complain about his mouse being laggy; and indeed it did.

When your mouse starts to lag, you know something is wrong.

First thing I did was download Everest Ultimate to monitore the temp, and what do you know...

CPU: 90°C
Core#1: 99°C
Core#2: 102°C
Core#3: 98°C
Core#4: 100°C

Oh lord.

So I jumped in my car and got a decent cooler

Hyper TX3 evo

With the stock cooling paste these were the temperatures after running full load for a while

CPU: 51°C
Core#1: 48°C
Core#2: 51°C
Core#3: 50°C
Core#4: 49°C

The temps are roughly 50% lower. That is insane. The laggy mouse was gone.

I think I was just on time. If this had gone on for a longer while it might have crashed.

Don't you think Intel is a bit to cheap with there stock crappy coolers? They suck as always, but this is beyond normal. It almost crashed with it at STOCK speeds.

I use a stock intel hsf with an i5-2400 at 3.7 and I don't see temps higher than mid 70's and this was in a room where the ambient temp was around 78f running oc'd 4870's in crossfire. I would lean more towards a hsf mounting pin coming loose or not in all the way in the first place. Or he lives in Az and is playing outdoors in the 120f heat.

And currently with the 580 that replaced the 4870's 72c is is about as high as i ever see it with ambient around 70f.

It also isn't correct to call 50 C 50% of 100 C. Technically 50 C is about 87% of 100 C.

Also, that sounds like poor seating.

Cooler was installed properly. I did it tons of times. When I de-installed it, it was still very tight. The paste was well spreaded.

I'm talking about 100% load here. Like in prime95. My brother does heavy CPU tasks, which makes it 100% all the time.

Don't occuse before you know anything please.

Yeah something else went wrong. One of the pushpins popped out. Or lots of dust. Or a loose fan cable. Something happened.

Plenty of people use stock Intel coolers without temps like that. There was definitely something else wrong --- too much paste, a bum fan, a push pin not locked --- something.

I ran an i7-920 @ stock with the Intel HSF in 80F + environments for 2 years without a single heat-related issue. Heck, I don't think I ever saw the thing get above 70C.

Improperly seated heatsink. Don't blame intel.

More than likely, but it's just easier to blame someone/something else rather than admit one's own shortcomings.....hence, it's Intel's heatsink design's fault---a heatsink capable of keeping that cpu cool at stock speeds even with 90F ambient temps.

Do you actually think intel doesn't do any 100% load tests on its heatsinks? Im sure they do it in much harsher conditions than in you brothers case, its ok to admit you screwed up.

If the heatsink was properly seated then about the only other thing it could be is the fan going bad or turned down to low in the fan control settings section of the BIOS.

Once again for the people that have a hard time reading. The cooler was secure when I removed it today. There was actually some dust under it. The stock cooler comes with some substance already on it.

It's just as easy to say I screwed up as for me to say Intel screwed up. So saying I screwed up without knowing the situation is what I call hypocrisy.

I wanted to show what impact it had when I swapped it for a decent cooler, when in these times when it's 30 degrees outside is pretty hard for ur PC.

Not sure if this has been said yet or not, but my first guess would be an improperly installed cooler or something wrong with the fan, dust, etc.

I have 95W TDP CPU on a stock heatsink and fan. Been running for about 4 yrs. Only time I saw these temps was when fan was not working.
Intel is not stupid to sell $300 CPUs with 3-5yrs warranty with worthless heatsink that can't support them in that time frame.

Do they even give stock coolers now? I learned the hard way when I built my i7 machine that I had to buy my own heat sink since when you buy the cpu you get ONLY the cpu. All the other CPUs I've bought before came with a heat sink though and it was always fine.

To be fair to OP, the push pins on my G620's OEM cooler had a couple of wonky push pins on it. Took me a while to get a solid seating with it. There is definitely some variance in the plastic on those things and he may have just been dealing with a dud.

That said, there are a lot of decent aftermarket coolers in the $20-30 range. TX3 is alright but I'd personally go with an original Hyper 212+.

With ambient temps of 30 C its not hard to imagine high temps. (In Australian summer it gets hotter too). Closed case temps will be even higher. Its pretty obvious that temps will be very high at 100% load. For example my Q6600 used to get to about 10 - 5C from throttling.

Saying that, if the OPs temps improved THAT much its likely something was wrong with the stock cooler.

Who knows, the OP's heatsink might have been machined wrong on the surface. The heatsink surface could be concave along with the CPU which put a significant gap between the base and the IHS. Heatsink should be flat or slightly convex.

That word, I don't think it means what you think it means.

If you went from 100C to 50C by switching the stock fan to a 212 Evo, you either had a defective stock fan or it wasn't installed properly. Thanks for sharing?
