I just opened a brand new Asus U47A laptop. Its a laptop from 2012 so its 6 years old....haha

Anyway, the battery is not charging when plugged in. Windows reports 0%. If I unplug the power cord, it just shuts off. Is there anything I can do to "jump-start" the battery to work or do you think that the battery is just permanently dead due to the long period of inactivity in the box?

Most likely...this. You can try connecting it, powering on, and leaving it for a few days, and see if it managed to trickle-charge it back to life. I've had that happen a couple of times. Could also try, removing battery, plug into AC, go to Device Manager, uninstall the Battery, and then plug the battery back in, and plug in the AC charger, and power on, and let it detect the "New" battery. This gets around Windows deciding that the battery is shot, so it turns off the charge, even if maybe the battery could be salvageable.

Chances are, though, after five years, it's not, and you should just invest in a new one.

Yes, it may trickle charge very slowly until the battery voltage gets high enough for the full charge rate to kick in.

Give it some time, it may come back.

Or it may not. 5 years is a long time.

Unfortunately, not a windows issue. Gave it a try. Will try to trickle charge it for a few days. If it doesn't work, I guess I will have to buy a new one.
