so I have a little box here, ahtlonxp 2400, via board, radeon vid card, etc... I would like to run linux on this box...only problem being that I've NEVER used it before (but want to learn).
I recently installed Simply Mepis 3.3. I am a Linux noob, and this was sugested by a few sources. Super simple installation after reading the pdf file. Up and on the internet very quickly. I like it for its ease of use. I still have a lot to learn about the platform, but I have no regrets choosing this disro. Good luck.
How much do you want to learn? Or do you just want to be able to use an alternative other than windows? Like patsfan said, SimplyMepis is probably the most noob friendly. Unfortunately I wasn't able to connect to their repository (their server that holds linux packages, or programs). But its still very the easiest to use.
I'd recommend Debian or Ubuntu for their repositories. Both good distros, Ubuntu being easier to use.
If you want a distro that takes work to setup and you'll gain a lot of knowledge installing/using go for gentoo.
My personal experience with fedora and radeon cards has been very poor. Of course you may very well have no trouble, but I've had ubuntu and knoppix work with no trouble (both debian based).
I'd say download and burn the SUSE live! version. You don't have to install anything. Just boot with the DVD and the OS basically runs off the DVD. You get to know what it's all about, mess around, do whatever you wish, mess with some of the many included software etc. This should give you a feel of things without having to install linux first. I can't think of a better way to get a feel of things for a first timer Just give it a try and I'm sure you'll love it.
radeon x800xt PCI-E with FC4 worked flawlessly ... but I no longer use FC4.
At any rate .. everyone is gonna throw a million distro's at you .. ultimatly, unless you are a power user, they will all be basically the same to a new user like yourself .. so try a few out, and pick the one that has the nicest UI and that you feel most comfortable with.
