Not only do I FF through half time and commercials, I FF through in-between downs. I can enjoy three games in the span of one.

Yeah, because hours of constant stoppages (live) or commercials (on tv) are so exhilarating.

The start stop of football causes moments of excitement. The constant droning people running around a field with an occasional kick doesn't.

This technology also existed, back when DVRs were called "VCRs."

I remember a few models that would pause recording during ad time. Some would auto-fast forward during the playback, but others would simply not record the ads at all.

It's pretty simple, I think. As with tracks on an album, I believe they are separated with microsecond blanks in the data, so the hardware quickly recognizes the next track, or notices when the broadcast switches from content to ads. something like that...

Now that I have a PVR I rarely watch live TV. It's crazy how much TV you can watch when you skip all the commercials.

FWIW, you can go to watch ANY NFL game without commercials streamed to your PC under "Condensed Games" by subscribing to NFL Game REWIND. They gave season ticket holders a free code for this and it's very nice, but the bandwidth is a little sluggish on NFL Network. It's pretty nice if you want to go back and see matchups. I rarely used this though because I have NFL Sunday Ticket too.

During the regular season, Sunday Ticket starts showing 30-minute rewinds of every play of each game on Sunday evenings through the night. I watch the 49ers game live, then record the 30-minute rewind during the week.

BTW, I haven't watched commercials in nearly 5 years if not more.

I don't think you understand how fast some rugby players are. Even the big ones. Not only that, they put it more miles per game by a long shot. If you wanna run a pro linebacker at a sizeable wing like Lomu, or a fast back row forward, football better take rugby out with the first hit (assuming he could catch him in the first place, lulz), because rugby will run circles around football while it's still trying to catch its breath.

Actually, in a bit of news that I blanked on because I'd just heard it, he is most recently a member of the Detroit Lions practice squad. Before that he was a rugby player (and may still be involved with the rugby team). He has never competed in any Olympic event for the US, although he was a competitive sprinter and had (distant) hopes of running in the Olympics.

So the short answer is "no."

I've been burned a lot by trying to DVR sports. Especially if the game goes into overtime, exactly the game you want to see. Now I try to start watching the game starting in the 2nd half so I can catch up and add an extra hour to the recording time.

Back in the VCR days, I was recording a Red Wings (hockey) playoff game. We get home, just about the time the game would typically end. I ask my wife to turn on the TV and see if it's over. She says "No, it's still in overtime."

I find watching football live to be a much more social and fun experience than say soccer. The amount of commercials are definitely excessive, but they allow you to really hang out with friends and chat and joke around, go get something from another room, etc. and not miss the action. Soccer you have to be glued to the TV for 45 minutes at a time hoping to see that 1 goal (2 if you're lucky).

So past few weeks I decided to DVR Football games (49er fan here).......and I cannot believe how little there is to actually watch once you skip through all the commercials and BS.

I watched the entire game in under 30 min? If I was to subtract all the skipping time, I'm guessing there would be maybe 10-15 of actual action/game?

I'm never watching football live again. What a waste of time. And why haven't I done that before?

I've had to do this in part each of the last two weeks and, yes, it's amazingly better.

But, as mentioned, you have to be a news hermit to make it work.

I figured his out when I use to play Madden on the PS3. Games are so much shorter without commercials.
