I find watching football live to be a much more social and fun experience than say soccer. The amount of commercials are definitely excessive, but they allow you to really hang out with friends and chat and joke around, go get something from another room, etc. and not miss the action. Soccer you have to be glued to the TV for 45 minutes at a time hoping to see that 1 goal (2 if you're lucky).

Makes for great bar watching. The 8 replays of a great play make it easy not to miss anything because you were hittin' on a chick or in the can takin' a piss.

I never truly realized how little football there really is in a game. 11 minutes? That explains a lot. I went to a few games and thought it was the biggest waste of time and money since I saw almost no football but instead just watched the cheerleaders. Dallas has some awesome cheerleaders.

for NFL reg season I toss the local games on some side tvs and put redzone on the main tv and that stays pretty entertaining for the early games.

for college football I have a room with 8 tvs and can usually get a game on each of them by splitting cable and running some espn3 on some xbox 360s. with 8 games there usually are a few to check in on.

for nfl playoffs I'm fine watching one game at a time live since it really is all that is going on in the sports world at the time.

the amount of time they actually spend playing the game is a joke.

that's my biggest problem with football.
ET of ball in play: 5 seconds
ET of play clock: 40 seconds
ET of commercials: 3 minutes

even ignoring the commercials, we spend more time watching the guys huddle, go into formation. the camera guy has to find so much filler shots by zooming into the crowd.

The reason why soccer is so great is that the most exciting parts (the goals) are rare, so when they occur, it makes it worth the wait. The build up to an attack in soccer is great if you are watching great teams play (EPL, La Liga) If goals were easy to score then it would actually be boring. Plus, nations against nations (The World Cup): rivalry that no other sport can match. Of course, not everything is great in soccer: players faking fouls, teams that don't try to attack, FIFA corruption, etc.

world cup soccer is watchable, but only when the US is playing.

So past few weeks I decided to DVR Football games
I agree: so?

Yeah, I like having time between plays. I've watched games with all of the downtime cut out and it's just too much, too fast. I want time to think about how the game is going, analyze various big plays, bitch about the refs/coaches/players/announcers, etc.

If you cut out everything but the actual plays (snap to tackle), it supposedly averages about 11 minutes. That's not enough time to eat 5 lbs of nachos.
Exactly. lol @ the nachos. I don't drink beer that fast either, to say nothing of the occasional potty break.

LOL exactly

Yeah, because hours of constant stoppages (live) or commercials (on tv) are so exhilarating.
They don't have commercials during soccer games?

No, actually, watching a bone-crunching tackle on a guy or a guy jumping way in the air to make an amazing catch or the QB throwing an amazing pass between 3 defenders in just the exact spot it had to go to be complete (etc etc, only about a million such examples) is exhilarating. It's also interesting to see how they use all the different plays, formations, strategies - again I could go on for quite awhile. It's an extremely complex game.

THIS, however, is not exhilarating and not exactly complex:

most of you must not watch any live sports then other than soccer. because pretty much any of the major sports take 2.5 - 3 hours to watch, and have an actual clock time of 60 minutes, other than baseball which has no clock.

hell golf is even longer. they only broadcast 4 hours a day usually but the actual tourney is much longer than that, and spread across 4 days.

i'd much rather watch golf than soccer, although i do jump on the bandwagon and get world cup fever every 4 years when it comes around, because i just like watching people compete.

Just going to throw this out there like everyone else does...

THINK OF THE PLAYERS!! When you skip commercials you are taking food out of the players mouths!!!
Like we need more reasons to skip commercials.

BTW, I haven't watched commercials in nearly 5 years if not more.
Me either. They're insanely annoying. Doesn't anyone else's mute button work?
