Classic metal fans will be happy next week, with the release of 3 tracks from Megadeth, though one of them is from their recent 2011 album.

DLC Week of 2/21 - Megadeth 3 Pack! Symphony of Destruction w/ Pro & more!

Hey gang,

For close to 30 years thrash metal pioneers Megadeth have wowed listeners with their brutal yet melodic sound, recording a number of platinum records and selling out arenas worldwide. On February 21st, “Megadeth Pack 01” brings three of the band’s tracks to the Rock Band Music Store.

1992’s Countdown to Extinction was an instant hit, debuting at #2 on the Billboard charts, thanks in part to the strong single “Symphony of Destruction,” the first track in this three pack of headbangers. The second track in the pack is “À Tout le Monde,” from Megadeth’s sixth studio album, 1994’s Youthanasia. This collection is rounded out by “Public Enemy No. 1” from the band’s latest record, 2011’s TH1RT3EN.

"This is an awesome game and fans get to play a cross-section of our best songs ever," said Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine. "I am going to have to learn my songs all over again!"

These three tracks add to an ever-growing library of Megadeth’s music that's playable in Rock Band; their classic records Peace Sells… but Who’s Buying? and Rust in Peace are also available for download in their entirety on the Rock Band Music Store. The band is currently touring North America, headlining the traveling festival Gigantour alongside Motörhead, Volbeat, and Lacuna Coil.

Available on Xbox 360, Wii™ and PlayStation®3 system (February 21st, 2012):

• Megadeth - "Symphony of Destruction" X
• Megadeth - "À Tout le Monde"
• Megadeth - "Public Enemy No. 1"

(These tracks will be available in Europe on PlayStation®3 system February 22nd)

Tracks marked with “X” will offer Pro Guitar and Pro Bass expansions for $0.99 per song.

Price:

$5.49, £2.49 UK, €3.99 EU (440 Microsoft Points, 550 Wii Points™) for “Megadeth Pack 01”
$1.99 USD, £.99 UK, €1.49 EU (160 Microsoft Points, 200 Wii Points™) per song
$0.99 USD (100 Wii Points™/80 Microsoft Points), £0.59 UK, €0.79 EU per song for eligible Pro Guitar/Pro Bass upgrade

The promised Huey Lewis 3-pack is up next week, and I like the look of the track selection. I will definitely be grabbing this one.

This week on RBN, Jerry Naylor has a rockabilly cover of the great song Not Fade Away originally by Buddy Holly, but it has been covered by many bands including The Rolling Stones. I always loved the Trout Fishing in America cover of this song, but it's nice to see it in any form. Here's something I didn't know until I googled it - Rush did a cover of this song which is only available as a rare single, but you can hear it on YouTube. Naylor has some other songs on RBN, including a cover of the famous song Real Wild Child (another cover of this by Everlife appeared in Lego Rock Band).

DLC Week of 2/28 - Huey Lewis & The News 3 Pack! Keys on all tracks!

Hey gang,

With nearly 20 top-ten singles under their belt, San Francisco-based rock & rollers Huey Lewis and the News’ remarkable career has spanned more than 30 years. The band made their Rock Band debut with “The Power of Love” on the Rock Band 3 disc, and now three more of the group’s hits are headed to the Music Store on February 28th.

“Do You Believe in Love,” from 1982’s Picture This, and the band’s first top ten hit, kicks off the three pack. “The Heart of Rock & Roll” and “I Want a New Drug” – both from their platinum-selling third record, 1983’s Sports – round out this collection of chart-topping hits. All songs will feature support for keyboards, with a Pro Guitar and Pro Bass upgrade available for “I Want a New Drug.”

Available on Xbox 360, Wii™ and PlayStation®3 system (February 28th, 2012):

* Huey Lewis and the News – “Do You Believe in Love” O
* Huey Lewis and the News – “The Heart of Rock & Roll” O
* Huey Lewis and the News – “I Want a New Drug” X O

(These tracks will be available in Europe on PlayStation®3 system February 29th)

Tracks marked with “O” feature support for keyboards; tracks marked with “X” will offer Pro Guitar and Pro Bass expansions for $0.99 per song.

Price:

$5.49, £2.49 UK, €3.99 EU (440 Microsoft Points, 550 Wii Points&#8482 for “Huey Lewis and the News Pack 01”

$1.99 USD, £.99 UK, €1.49 EU (160 Microsoft Points, 200 Wii Points&#8482 per song

Three singles up next week. I'm sort of "meh" on all of them, maybe I will pick up something eventually.

A more interesting tidbit of news is that Harmonix plans to announce a new title at PAX East on Saturday, April 7th. Whether it is another Rock Band, Dance Central or something else is unknown, though it seems a bit early for another DC title.

DLC Week of 3/2 - Singles from Everclear, Good Charlotte and Mastodon!

Hey gang,

Portland, Oregon rock band Everclear had their first hit with “Santa Monica,” the fourth track off of 1995’s Sparkle and Fade. The track, which found radio popularity despite never officially being released as a single, comes to the Rock Band Music Store complete with a Pro Guitar and Pro Bass upgrade.

“The Anthem,” Good Charlotte’s second single off of their second album, 2002’s The Young and the Hopeless, is also on its way to the Music Store. The catchy, uptempo track was a hit for Good Charlotte, and quickly climbed the charts worldwide.

Since their formation in 2000, Mastodon has won over metal fans and critics with their dense, monstrous sound and complex compositions. In 2011, the band released The Hunter, featuring the Grammy nominated track “Curl of the Burl,” which rounds out a trio of singles slated to hit the Rock Band Music Store on March 6th.

Available on Xbox 360, Wii™ and PlayStation®3 system (March 6th, 2012):

* Everclear – “Santa Monica” X
* Good Charlotte – “The Anthem”
* Mastodon – “Curl of the Burl”

(These tracks will be available in Europe on PlayStation®3 system March 7th)

Tracks marked with “X” will offer Pro Guitar and Pro Bass expansions for $0.99 per song.

Price:

$1.99 USD, £.99 UK, €1.49 EU (160 Microsoft Points, 200 Wii Points™) per song

$0.99 USD (100 Wii Points™/80 Microsoft Points), £0.59 UK, €0.79 EU per song for eligible Pro Guitar/Pro Bass upgrade

Harmonix accidentally let their blog post slip early this week, revealing a 3-pack of Three Days Grace coming next week. I'm not interested in this pack, but I don't care because I'm too busy with Mass Effect anyway.

Very nice lineup next week - I might get everything. Some absolutely classic 80s from Men at Work, plus Santana's big hit "Smooth".

DLC Week of 3/20 - Men at Work (Down Under & Overkill) and Santana (Smooth)!

Hey gang,

With their catchy hooks and off-beat sense of humor, Australia’s Men at Work became a huge success in the ‘80s. One of their best known tracks, “Down Under” – the second single from 1981’s Business as Usual – became a number one hit on the U.S. Billboard charts in the year of its release. The Aussie band found similar success with 1983’s album Cargo, and their second single off the record, “Overkill.” Both tracks come to the Rock Band Music Store on March 20th.

Finding his first success in the late ‘60s, guitarist Carlos Santana is nothing short of a legend. His band Santana returned to mainstream success in 1999 with their album, Supernatural, thanks in no small part to the hit single “Smooth.” A collaboration with Matchbox Twenty’s Rob Thomas, the single rocketed to the top of worldwide charts and won three Grammy Awards, including one for “Song of the Year.” This certified platinum single comes to Rock Band next week, with an optional Pro Guitar and Pro Bass upgrade.

Available on Xbox 360, Wii™ and PlayStation®3 system (March 20th, 2012):

* Men at Work – “Down Under” O
* Men at Work – “Overkill” O
* Santana – “Smooth” O X

(These tracks will be available in Europe on PlayStation®3 system March 21st)

Tracks marked with “O” feature support for keyboards; tracks marked with “X” will offer Pro Guitar and Pro Bass expansions for $0.99 per song.

Price:

$1.99 USD, £.99 UK, €1.49 EU (160 Microsoft Points, 200 Wii Points™) per song

$0.99 USD (100 Wii Points™/80 Microsoft Points), £0.59 UK, €0.79 EU per song for eligible Pro Guitar/Pro Bass upgrade

Next week HMX will release some more modern hits with a 3-pack of Shinedown. Not bad - I'll put these on my "when I have some extra points" list.

There are a couple of other pieces of interesting news this week. First, ThatAuthoringGroup, a well-known RBN authoring organization is planning to launch a Kickstarter campaign in order to license some better-known artists into RBN. It will be interesting to see where that goes.

Second, there's a rather unusual announcement from HMX that Sony Europe and Nintendo everywhere will experience a temporary interruption in DLC that may last a few months. The announcement doesn't really make it clear why, but I hope this isn't the lead-in to something ominous, considering the declining state of the music game market.

EDIT: HMX posted some useful clarification of the DLC interruption announcement.

DLC Week of 3/27 - Shinedown 3 Pack! Keys on all tracks!

Hey gang,

Known for their catchy melodies and hard rocking riffs, Florida-based band Shinedown first hit the scene in early-2000s. In 2008, the band’s popularity grew with their successful third album, The Sound of Madness, which produced a string of hit singles. Two of these tracks, “Second Chance” and “The Crow and the Butterfly,” will come to the Rock Band Music Store on Tuesday, March 27th!

Shinedown’s long-awaited fourth studio album, Amaryllis, hits shelves on March 27th. “Bully,” the first single off of the record, has already made its mark on the Billboard charts, and hits the Music Store as part of the “Sounds of Shinedown Pack.”

An optional Pro Guitar and Pro Bass upgrade for “Second Chance,” the band’s most successful single to date, will also be available.

Available on Xbox 360, Wii™ and PlayStation®3 system (March 27th, 2012):

• Shinedown – “Second Chance” O X
• Shinedown – “The Crow and the Butterfly” O
• Shinedown – “Bully” O

(These tracks will be available in Europe on PlayStation®3 system March 28th)

("Bully" will be delayed on PS3 in the US and should be available on 4/10. This should not affect the availability of the Shinedown pack on the PS3.)

Tracks marked with “O” feature support for keyboards; tracks marked with “X” will offer Pro Guitar and Pro Bass expansions for $0.99 per song.

Price:

$5.49, £2.49 UK, €3.99 EU (440 Microsoft Points, 550 Wii Points&#8482 for “Sounds of Shinedown Pack”
$1.99 USD, £.99 UK, €1.49 EU (160 Microsoft Points, 200 Wii Points&#8482 per song
$0.99 USD (100 Wii Points™/80 Microsoft Points), £0.59 UK, €0.79 EU per song for eligible Pro Guitar/Pro Bass upgrade

Harmonix is jumping over to the pop genre next week with a 4-pack of P!nk. I'm kind of meh on these songs, and a little annoyed that the one P!nk song I really wanted, "Raise Your Glass", is not in this pack. But I'm kind of hoping it's because they are putting it in Rock Band Blitz. Only time will tell.

DLC Week of 4/17 - P!nk 4 Pack! Less Than Jake and Eden's Curse on RBN!

Hey gang,

Known for her powerful voice and edgy style, P!nk has had no problem dominating the charts worldwide with her infectious pop-rock sounds. Four of the singer/songwriter’s biggest hits are headed to the Rock Band Music Store on April 17th as “P!nk Pack 01”!

“Get the Party Started,” from 2001’s Missundaztood, leads off the pack; a Pro Guitar and Pro Bass upgrade will be available for this chart-topping hit. Three tracks from 2008’s Grammy-nominated Funhouse round out the pack: “Sober,” “Please Don’t Leave Me,” and the album’s fifth single and title track, “Funhouse.”

Available on Xbox 360, Wii and PlayStation®3 system (April 17th, 2012):

• P!nk – “Get the Party Started” O X
• P!nk – “Sober” O
• P!nk – “Please Don’t Leave Me” O

Harmonix breaks out the 80s hair! While Cinderella is not my favorite hair band, I'll still definitely get this.

DLC Week of 4/24 - Cinderella makes their RB debut with a 3 pack!

Hey gang,

One of hard rock’s most successful bands during the 1980s, Cinderella has sold more than 20 million albums worldwide. On April 24th, a three pack of songs from this multi-platinum band is headed to the Rock Band Music Store!

“Nobody’s Fool,” Cinderella’s second single from its triple platinum debut, Night Songs, kicks off the pack. The power ballad “Don’t Know What You Got (Till It’s Gone),” off of 1998’s Long Cold Winter, was the band’s most successful single. The song will be available as part of the three pack, with an optional Pro Guitar and Pro Bass Upgrade. Closing out the pack will be “Shelter Me,” the lead single from 1990’s Heartbreak Station.

Available on Xbox 360 and PlayStation®3 system (April 24th , 2012):

Three singles this week, and what singles they are! "Drops of Jupiter" and "Two Tickets to Paradise" are both insta-buys for me, and that Yellowcard track isn't too bad either. Only problem is I'm out of MSP.

DLC Week of 5/1 - Singles from Eddie Money, Train and Yellowcard!

Hey gang,

On May 1st, Harmonix releases single tracks from three different artists, spanning over 30-years of chart-topping music!

First up is Eddie Money’s well-known hit “Two Tickets to Paradise,” from the singer/songwriter’s self-titled 1977 debut record. Train’s Grammy-winning single “Drops of Jupiter,” from the band’s 2001 album of the same name, will also be available. Rounding out this broad musical selection is pop-punk band Yellowcard’s infectious “Only One,” the third single off of 2003’s Ocean Avenue!

Pro Guitar and Pro Bass upgrades will be available for “Two Tickets to Paradise” and “Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me).”

Available on Xbox 360, Wii and PlayStation®3 system (May 1st, 2012):

* Eddie Money – “Two Tickets to Paradise” O X
* Train – “Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me)” O X
* Yellowcard – “Only One” O

Tracks marked with “O” feature support for keyboards; tracks marked with “X” will offer Pro Guitar and Pro Bass expansions for $0.99 per song.

I am looking for a decent guitar to play GH/RB on and was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction. I've been looking at the WarBeast on Amazon but some bad reviews have me wondering if I should go that route. Right now we have RB 1, 2, ACDC, GH WT, VH, Met, & 5.

Also, can you play more than 4 players at a time on any of these games?

Rock Band 3 will support 7 players in all instruments mode (guitar + bass + drums + keys + 3 vocalists). However, vocalists don't get any score in AIM. If you drop out one guitar/bass you can have 6 players while still getting a vocals score.

Since you are looking at the Warbeast I assume you have a PS3. I have an Xbox so I don't have experience with PS3 instruments, but both the RB3 Strat and this GH5 guitar should at least be decent. However, guitars are a matter of personal preference, so try before you buy if possible.

Thanks for the informative post. I will check those out and take your advice. Mainly I am looking for something a bit bigger than the GHWT guitar as I am a very big guy and my hands and arms strain and cramp up with heavy play on those small guitars.

The largest guitar I have is my wooden Stratocaster replica, which is exactly the same size as a real Strat, but I don't think they ever made that guitar for PS3. It's an awesome guitar though.

If you mean the Fender Squier, yes, I have one. It's pretty fun (though difficult!). I'll probably get back to it soon, I got diverted onto some other things after getting it. It's only useful for pro mode though.

Next week Harmonix is taking it back to some very classic metal with a 6-pack of Iron Maiden "epics", including the 13-minute "Rime of the Ancient Mariner". Iron Maiden fans rejoice.

DLC Week of 5/22 - Iron Maiden Epics 6 Pack!

Hey gang,

Unquestionably one of the most influential forces in heavy metal, Iron Maiden spearheaded metal in the early eighties and continue to define the genre. With over 85 million album sales, more than 2,000 live performances worldwide, and 15 studio albums to date, Iron Maiden are one of the hardest rocking and hardest working bands in rock.

On May 22nd, the six song pack “Maiden Epics” comes to the Rock Band Music Store. "Maiden Epics" represents a selection of Iron Maiden's most powerful and epic tracks from their albums recorded during the 1980s and thus ties in with their 2012 “Maiden England” Tour, the set list for which will be almost exclusively filled with classics from that remarkable decade.

Tracks in the “Maiden Epics” pack include: “Phantom of the Opera” from the band’s 1980 self-titled debut studio record; “The Prisoner” from 1982’s Number of the Beast; “The Flight of Icarus” from 1983’s Piece of Mind; the 13-minute epic “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” from 1984’s Powerslave; and “Infinite Dreams” and “Seventh Son of a Seventh Son,” from 1988’s Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.

This June, Iron Maiden will embark on an extensive "Maiden England" North American tour starting in Charlotte, NC on June 21st and finishing up in Houston, TX on August 18th. For more information, head to http://www.ironmaiden.com/tourdates.php.
